Aguirre is a great one.

Then again, Aguirre is a pretty despicable character as well.

Heat is another closing shot that just kills me.

Late Spring is a great introduction, while also being, in my opinion, his most beautiful film. But it's hard to go wrong with any of them, and I'd say Tokyo Story, Early Summer, The Only Son, A Story of Floating Weeds (1934), Record of a Tenement Gentleman, Early Spring, An Inn in Tokyo, and An Autumn Afternoon are all similarly near-perfect films.

You're not alone. The bookend frame story sections are fantastic. But, the center piece of the film left something to be desired.

Of course I must add a disclaimer: I find noir in general to be exploitation cinema. Almost all critically lauded noirs I've seen suffer from being overly melodramatic, having unbelievable relationship development, ridiculous dialogue, and an absolute focus on plot devices at the expense of any character development/examination. There are many noirs that I love, but most of them blend elements of other genres.

I didn't figure it out by the film title.
I read about the plot, and it seems they are the same characters.

The 400 Blows would get my vote for best final shot, closely followed by The Passenger. Psycho is a great one too, especially if we're talking about a shot which makes audiences empathise with a despicable figure.

They are a part of the Noriko trilogy along with Tokyo Story. Setsuko Hara plays a different character named Noriko with a different last name in all 3 films. But other than that each movie is independent from each other. Early Summer has a story very similar to adult Taeko's story in Only Yesterday.

Oh, I'm sorry,I'm confused here!
There are 3 different films with no relation to each other?

I just saw at imdb:

Late Spring
has the characters:
Noriko Somiya
Shukichi Somiya

Early Summer
has the characters:
Noriko Mamiya
Shukichi Mamiya

Tokyo Story has the characters:
Noriko Hirayama
Shukichi Hirayama

edit: Ah, Ok, now I saw the previous post!
And I thought it was the same story!

Tokyo Story rounds out the Noriko Trilogy. You don't need to see one to enjoy or appreciate another tho, they're a little bit like Antonioni's trilogy on modernity in the sense that they're more thematically connected than narratively.

early summer is a sequel to late spring.. then summer.. then late summer. early autumn, autumn, and so on.. you probably get it.

I don't like what comes after autumn, though. early winter and winter are too cold for my tastes.

Winter is my favourite season! (and then comes autumn)
(it seems I was born in a wrong country, where we usually have sun!)

There are probably more obvious choices but watched so many films over the last couple days my heads a bit of a mess :P

Most of my choices are down to how the film works the music with the imagery, and how the entire journey of the film si summer dup in the final shot/sequence and most of these ends are so rewarding, a certain one is more shocking and like noooooo but that is what made that one memorable for me

The Fall ending is a little more fun and that is why I find it so memorable it is a bit of a cheat but its great, I wouldn't say this spoils the film btw its more of a little treat to us film fans, especially fans of the silent film stunts:
Life is Beautiful
Eden Lake
Jude the Obscure
Irreversible

I've never seen Koyaanisquatsi.

But the concept seems pretty cool.

Sans Soleil is one of my favorite art films.

Check it out - its incredible, the other two films in the Qatsi trilogy arn't as good but I would say its a set you just own.

Philip Glass's score is magical and the imagery it is put to is so haunting, I find it very emotional and I also find it quite depressing, but others take different views on it.

This is really good advice. Any of Ozu's sound dramas would probably make a good introduction. The difference between the best of these and the worst of these is so small. All three Noriko trilogy films would make a great introduction, with Late Spring being my personal favorite (and maybe my favorite film of all time).

If we're specifically looking at Criterion releases, Late Spring provides the added benefit of the excellent documentary Tokyo Ga, while Tokyo Story provides multiple documentaries about Ozu and Chishu Ryu. Both include commentaries as well. Really nice packages.
