I could see the original DD being better for a first time viewing, but I much prefer the director's cut when I watch it now.

I know people will say there's no difference in motion, but I try to get always the best even if I don't see it.

Filmmusic,

You really need to stop dismissing various releases -- including Paris, Texas and The French Lieutenant's Woman -- without actually having even touched the discs.

Get the disc, watch the presentation, then criticize -- if you actually know what you are talking about. Because there are real people behind these releases and it is getting awfully tiring at this point to constantly see their work dismissed by someone -- typically Mr. Anonymous -- on the internet who did not even bother to purchase the disc he is apparently disappointed with.

Thank you.

I like the directors cut also, the music is much better and more in-line with the feel of the film.

Are there many films where the theatrical version is universally considered better than the director's cut?

I heard that the theatrcal version of Empire Records is much better than the directors cut.

For Friday the 13th I'm assuming you're referring to the shot on the lake, not of Alice in the hospital? If so, I completely agree. That music combined with the reflections on the water. Love it.

I get the music in the D/C is what he wants originally but I have gotten so used to the original cut, its awkward to hear the newer pieces. Now that fault isn't the filmmaker, thats one for not adjusting - but the original work abetter now for me.

My main issue with D/C is the added scenes kind of spoon feed the audience and takes all the mystery away from the film.

I do love the added scene in the classroom with the poem though - thats a keeper but the spoon feeding sin't needed really. If others enjoy the D/C then fair do's but I am sticking to the original .

It i just more mysterious and dark, I adore it.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand why we aren't allowed to say our opinion, based on what we see..
Ok, maybe we can't see it in motion, but I think I have said it again:
If i want to make a poster of a screenshot, I would choose the best edition, won't I?
And right now, as I see it, Criterion isn't the one, but Arrow.
It's really evident to me in a 1080p screenshot, let alone when it will be magnified!

I got Paris-Texas in the sale, but I have a hunch that if when I see it I stick to my opinion, you'll still be bothered that I said something bad about Criterion, which honestly I can't understand.

By the way, I have nothing personal with Criterion!
I don't get anything for saying somethind bad!
We're just sharing opinions here..

I have to say it again, I'm so happy I bought Hiroshima Mon Amour. As an introvert, it's was the perfect story for me. So much happen internally within each of the main characters. Reminded me of Wings of Desire. Also, I really appreciated watching the supplements.

Interesting that Criterion screwed up this transfer with unintended distortions in the framing. Every now and then even the best companies mess up, and it goes to show just how great their customer service is for getting on this so quickly and refunding people's purchases. I will gladly wait until the next big sale to buy the corrected version.

This is sad. A film that should have been a big seller for Criterion will end up making much less by forcing a reprint.

In this case Criterion is saying DePalma thought the faces were too wide so they applied a squeeze to it and Depalma said "OK".

Maybe they should ditch the director Approved junk. We all know how many directors love to change things in their movies from time to time.

It's not just that image.. Almost all the images I see have a worse compression than the Arrow release.

I honestly can't think what would happen if I'd say that a Criterion release is rubbish! Which, I haven't done!
I'm just saying that in the specific situation, the Arrow is better.

When someone releases something, he can expect an opinion right?
I don't understand why we always have to praise Criterion.
We are all judged.
I am judged too in my work..

and about French Lieutenant's woman: I just said it looks better than previous releases, but it could look much better!
Is this so bad a comment?
So, i should say that as i see it this is a marvellous release and the best the film could EVER be?
Will you be satisfied Pro-B?

I was joking

No I agree, I think everyone should be entitled to their own opinion, especially when they can back it up.

Yes a lot of hard work goes into these releases, but Criterion, like most company aren't perfect - its not end of the world.

I have openly said bad things about certain Criterion releases because there have been facts and problems. I am not sure why Pro B made that comment as in his reviews he has said negative things about some releases, an the has to as a reviewer.

Oh well.

I can't think of a more irrelevant comment when it comes to the quality of a blu-ray release than that human beings were responsible for it and might get their feelings hurt by your criticism.

well, I think he said it because I haven't bought the discs and I'm based solely on screenshot comparisons.
But even so, I would prefer the Arrow.
If I have to choose between 2 t-shirts, one without a hole, and one with a hole which is in a place that is not evident but I know it's there, it's the logical thing that I will choose the T-shirt without the hole!
Even if I don't see it.
Even if noone can see it!

I don't see anything wrong in that..

Thats fair though - as a possible customer, you want to see what you are buying prior, in term son these sort of releases, people do scout about to buy the best quality release.

I have bought MoC over Criterion because they have put out a better disc/contents and vice versa. I made those purchases base don forum feedback + screen grabs (and bluray.com reviews of the discs!)

Oh well lol

That's not really what he said though.

He said it's frustrating to see somebody's hard work dismissed by somebody who hasn't even seen it.

It's not an unfair point.

I don't think that comparison establishes that the Arrow release is superior. Looks like some dirt or other artifacts that Criterion judiciously removed. Feel free to stick with the one you like.

"Try to get the best even if I don't see it" is a great policy, would you care to buy "Rolex" from me? I can offer a great price, and you'll never see "difference."
