Watched yesterday My Beautiful Laundrette.
Wasn't blown away by it, but it's a cute little film. I liked the atmosphere very much, and maybe I'll buy it some time in the future.
The thing I didn't like at all was the "bubble" score, but it was really 2-3 music cues here and there.

Like Louie CK said this season... "You saw Clockwork Orange?!" Lol

Great responses to my question regarding which Asian filmmakers you'd like to see represented by criterion. There really are so many great films and directors I'd love to see in HD.

*Hunter in the Dark
*Bandit vs. Samurai Squad
*Samurai Wolf 1+2

Three Outlaw Samurai is an amazing release, even though there are not really any extras. Would love to see an upgrade of the same quality to Sword of the Beast and Criterion to get their hands on Goyokin.

I'd place it fourth behind AWUTI, Bookie, and Opening Night (my favorite of his). Definitely not a good gateway into his filmography, but a safe bet if you like the films in the set.

I know women who love A Clockwork Orange.

Me, I think it's relatively silly and juvenile. Probably Kubrick's worst (other than his very early stuff).

My final haul from B&N:

Ace in the Hole
Ballad of Narayama
The Black Stallion
The Big City
Charluta
The Fisher King
Gate of Hell
Investigation of a citizen above suspicion
It Happened One Night
The Killers
Odd Man Out
The Palm Beach Story
Rififi
Le Silence De La Mer
Il Sorpasso
Sullivans Travels
Sundays and Cybele
Time Bandits
Valeria and her week of wonders
Saftely Last
Monsier Verdoux
Make Way For tommorrow

With Night and the City on the way.

I like Clockwork Orange. The film retains a energy to it and is purposely over the top and bizarre with a dreamlike maniac vibe . There is not much like it out there. Plus the removal of the film from cinema's and the controversy behind it is all fascinating. Its almost always listed in top 50 or 100 film lists and was highly influential. IMO one of Kubricks best films.

There are parts of 2001 I love, but much of it is a waste including the extremely long psychedelic sequence at the end which was so in vogue in the 60's. The Killing would be a better movie without the narration, Lolita I blame the time it was made since many aspects of the story had to be alluded to for fear of censors. I think Full Metal Jacket, Barry Lyndon, Dr Strangelove & The Shining are his best films with Clockwork right there with them. Eye's Wide Shut is a good movie and Kubrick really makes you feel the paranoia, but to me it seems something is missing there. All of this is of course just my opinion.

This is absurd. I've met plenty of women who have watched - and liked - the film. Just because the protagonist is male doesn't mean its skewed towards that gender. Kubrick's films are about man's relation to the world, but that doesn't mean it's limited in its appeal.

This reminds me of when Kyle Smith foolishly claimed Goodfellas can only be appreciated by men, and rightly received a ton of flak.

I wouldn't mind seeing what they'd do with Johnnie To, perhaps Fulltime Killer or the Election films. Sonatine by Takeshi Kitano and Takashi Miike's Blues Harp would also be a good fit imo.

That being said, I would certainly go for a Ki-duk Kim release, Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring would be nice. On the lesser known front, recently watched Shuji Terayama's Pastoral Hide & Seek, it was strange, yet beautiful, I think Criterion fans would dig this. It's a shame that after all these years we've yet to see a Yimou Zhang title. To Live & Raise The Red Lantern are both much needed editions to the collection. Last but not least, I hope to see upgrades of both Ugetsu & Onibaba sometime in the near future.
Ugetsu & Onibaba each have a duo format release in Region B/2 Masters of Cinema series.

Yes please! I'd love to see Criterion versions of the Election films, Running Out of Time, Throw Down, Exiled, Fulltime Killer and The Mission. I haven't seen the last two as they weren't available on Blu-ray the last time I checked.

I tried to post a couple of pictures but it won't let me...

Here's my answer:

Shunji Iwai - All About Lily Chou-Chou
Takeshi Kitano - Fireworks
Hou Hsiao-Hsien - Flowers of Shanghai
Park Chan-wook - Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
Shinya Tsukamoto - Tetsuo The Iron Man
Katsuhito Ishii - Taste of Tea
Nagisa Oshima - Diary of a Shinjuku Thief
Sion Sono - Love Exposure

Speaking of a Clockwork Orange... Apparently, Kubrick was very fond of Toshio Matsumoto's "Funeral Parade Of Roses", and it's often said that the film was a huge inspiration to him. That's another one I would like to see in the Criterion Collection.

Takeshi Kitano, no matter what. And Park Chan-Wook's Vengeance trilogy.

I guess they'd be the ones to do it at this point. Eurekas DVD (which is great) went OOP due to poor sales, so we won't be seeing an upgrade there. Don't know if you've seen it so I won't spoil anything for you regarding the Clockwork comparison, but this would be one blu announcement far out of left field that would surprise me.
