Next time someone gets to visit the office, they should refuse to leave until they get a selfie with Jon (or whomever plays him) so we can know for sure!

And if "Jon" is in fact a woman, find out if she likes A Clockwork Orange!

As much as I would love him go o back to his routes and make more film like Following, Prestige and memento. I do love watching Inception, Interstellar etc, they are fun and you don't have to over think. He has great casting and his soundtracks are brilliant, I adore Interstellar's music so much.

I get bored of people saying he's the next Kubrick or whatever because that is a load of bollocks. He is his own director an the makes films more a mainstream audience, but tries to make them a bit different and unique.

If you don't like him then be it...

(Memento & Prestige would be great in collection :P)

On another note seeing Fantastic 4 later, my main reason for seeing it Philip Glass is freaking scoring it! plus Marvel films can be fun lol.
Speaking of Philip Glass, his score for Errol Morris' The Thin Blue Line is truly outstanding. And the AQ on Criterion's blu-ray is nigh-perfect, allowing Glass' music to shine.

Also from earlier topics:
My wife is a huge Scorsese fan. Loves Goodfellas, Casino & Wolf of wall st.

I've never seen clockwork orange with her though, doubt she would like it.

I agree Ridley Scott is alittle overrated. His more recent work has been poor. But Chris Nolan isn't a hack folks. God I hate when people call directors/things pretentious i.e.: Malick. If arthouse non commercial is pretentious then like 80% of the Criterion Collection would be erased what movies would you even be left to watch lol?

Ooh, that sounds very enticing. I'm taking my time through the series, watching a disc every few months or so and have found that I appreciate it better.

Will probably dig into disc 6 within the next few weeks.

The one thing I don't like about this box is that all the special features are at the end. It would have been nice to get some as we go, like they did with the Les Blank set.

I'm calling Spike Jonze.

Someone needs to go to the Criterion offices and make Being Jon Mulvaney.

Come to think of it, when I visited, I think all anyone said was "Mulvaney, Mulvaney, Mulvaney."

He also did A Brief History of Time :-)

Also got back from Fantastic 4 and the Philip Glass score was a bit of a lie - I could only hear his signature style in one piece of music, I think someone else helped score it and they kind of killed the score tbh

Leon Morin, Priest
Last Year at Marienbad

I won't tell you the price, but it was below the going market for all combined.

That leaves two OOP Blu-Rays for completion: The Third Man and Pierrot Le Fou.

Also haven't bought Blue is the Warmest Color, but I'm waiting for that 'special edition' that may or may not ever happen.
Awesome! Glad you were able to get them, and at a good price.

I tried to wait longer for a Blue special edition, but I'm not optimistic about it. There is one film from years ago that they promised a special edition of, but it still hasn't occurred. It was pre-bluray, but I cannot recall which film. I take solace in knowing that if it does occur, I only spent around $10 on the current edition.

I have both The Third Man and Pierrot Le Fou, sealed copies. I'm inclined to keep Pierrot, but I've been wanting to get rid of The Third Man for about a year. I haven't put it up on eBay or anything, though. While I really like the film, it's not one that I've felt a desire to return to often, which is why I think it's best that I get rid of it to someone who will cherish it more than I. If you're interested in it, send me a pm and maybe we can work something out.

Yes! The Scent of Green Papaya is the only film I have of his and such a georgous film. My knowledge of Asian filmmakers outside of what Criterion releases is poor, which is a shame since I'm Asian myself.

Since I know nothing about any of the films in the Nikkatsu Noir set, I told my wife to pick a number 1 - 5. She picked 4, so I watched Cruel Gun Story first. I was pleased with the PQ. The contrast levels seem to be set well and the image is clean, i.e. not much in the way of dirt and debris.

I enjoyed the movie. It zips along at a rapid fire pace covering nearly every noir convention known to man. It may not be high art, but for its 90 minute run time, it was good fun. About a 6/10

I started Take Aim at the Police Van last night because it has the shortest run time. I had thought there was a Seijun Suzuki film in the set, but at the time I bought it, I thought I had checked and found out there wasn't. So, I was pretty glad to find out that I was wrong. This one is a bit more conventional for a Suzuki film, but in relative comparison, it is more original than Cruel Gun Story. It is a bit convoluted and also moves along pretty quickly (78 minutes total run time.) About half way in, I figured that I owe Suzuki and myself a fresh brain for the end of this one, so I will resume it later today. Liking it though, so far.

I'm excited to hear what you think of A Colt is My Passport. It's the set's masterpiece.

I think so far, I'm liking the Suzuki film better than Cruel Gun Story, so if it gets better than this, I have a feeling that I'll be very happy with the set overall.

While watching CGS, I felt that it would benefit from watching with company because it is such an easy watch and it is kinda silly, too, at times. I can see watching these movies with my son when he gets older.. munching on popcorn and staying up past his bed time.

I also got Late Ozu, but my copy was another one of the aforementioned soccer balls that was used in the B&N stock room prior to shipment. My local store is replacing it. Can't wait to have time to see those.

A Colt is my Passport is definitely great, but I can't help but think its badass finale helps it tremendously. I mean, the rest of stuff prior to the finale certainly isn't bad, but it's the finale that lifts it into cult classic.

My favourite film of the Nikkatsu set is actually Take Aim at the Police Van though. Though it doesn't have a legendary set piece like "Colt", I like the way it's paced and how there's a steady stream of odd or picturesque scenes. The arrow in the breast, the truck/van gas scene, and I just dig the premise of a befuddled middle aged older guy who doesn't quite know what to do in a noir movie. It's obviously much more conventional Suzuki, but just offbeat enough from the typical fare which obviously portented more in Suzuki's career.

of all the dumb 'engaging in conversation' that was had, this was the post you singled out?

defending a director you like when someone says, "Joe Director iz da WORSST!" is "feeding the trolls."

Ray's post was two words - short, appropriate, and to the point.

1. I wasn't addressing you.
2. Your response to me is applicable to YOUR response, to me.
3. I'm in complete agreement with you're assessment of Ray's post.
4. I was growing weary of the troll-like replies from his addressee.

I hope this eases your mind as to my intent. If not, put me on your ignored list.
