Has a film that has been released in the Eclipse series ever been rereleased as part of the Criterion series?

Or you could try Yojimbo + Sanjuro. Kurosawa was inspired by John Ford's westerns to make these films, which in turn inspired Sergio Leone's Man with No Name series of westerns.

I don't even want to think about the November sale lol. I have 54 titles on my Criterion wishlist now that I also added The Hidden Fortress thanks to this thread.

I love it too, on its own merit and not what it influenced ... By that same token, I cannot watch the film and not think of Star Wars. It makes me actually appreciate the latter more and often makes me want to re-watch it.

Speaking of which, this is cool:

Toshiro Mifune was great as he is in all of the Kurosawa films he did. His physicality always makes him the center of attention for me.

Watched the first half of Fisher King last night, the second half tonight.
You can definitely tell that it is a Gilliam film. Great performances from all involved!

Here's a great read, and the list includes many many Criterion titles...

Paste Magazine's 100 Best Film Noirs of All Time

I've been a fan of Paste Magazine for many years now, because of the quality of their articles and music/movie reviews. The above list has a few controversial "Is this really noir?" choices on the list, but I'd say that it hits the mark on the genre more often than not.

I was surprised by the choice for the number one spot. I agree that it's a fantastic film noir, and that it's one of the greats of the genre, but I never would have expected it to take the top spot, especially since a film that the director made the following year usually earns much higher accolades as a noir.

I must admit, I've never seen that top choice, and I've liked/loved every Lang I've seen (not to mention Robinson always impresses me.) I agree that a lot of those shouldn't have been even considered. Should have limited it to 30s-50s cinema. Still, any of the films in the top ten could have taken that number one slot.

I stopped scrolling through it when The Grifters was above Angel Face. My eyes nearly rolled out of my head.

I love I Married a Witch as well though. There's nothing wrong with Criterion having some playful romantic comedies like this in their catalog.
I was wondering: Am i the only one who feels Veronica Lake is one of the worst actresses I' ve ever seen?
She seems so "wooden" to me!
Even when she's not speaking and she is just moving..

of the films that I am familiar with, everything seemed legitimately "noir." niced that they sprayed to all fields here and have a few French and a Kurosawa film on the list. sure is a great list if you're looking for a damn good movie to watch tonight.

how many of these 100 have you seen, Owl? maybe we should place bets.. I'll put the over/under for # of films that Owl has seen from this list at 87.

Paste has a very loose definition of film-noir.

Anything in color and anything post 1940-50's.

I go by a stricter definition of the term and generally don't use terms like neo-noir. Those are crime pieces or dramas not film-noir. I love Drive but it's not a film-noir.

I, for one, do not see a point in the inclusion of David Lynch films nor neo-noirs.

Muchas Gracias
Noir-Hunting had been slow lately, this certainly helps.
Made 5 unwatched discoveries, including 'The Prowler' which I'll be watching ASAP.
And IMHO 'Double Indemnity' has deservedly owned that #1 Noir tag since the french coined it.

Also, I'm full agreement with you that according to this article, Scarlet Street would've been ranked decimally (0,1)

I hear you... I tend to agree, but there should be a few exceptions: L.A. Confidential, Chinatown, Brick... those are noir to their very core.

The list is labeled film-noir so those films should not be included. Film-noir implies a stricter definition of the term.
