If this new 4K release is so great, perhaps I should sell my Criterion copy...

(I think the Criterion still looks a hair better)

(I also believe a Criterion re-release is going to come eventually so what do I know)

I am hoping that this resurgence in interest about Rivette means we'll see some interest from Criterion. I would love to see Julie and Celine Go Boating.

I've seen that the price has come down even on eBay. Good thing because it was really outrageous.

I'm far from an expert, but I'd probably agree with you based on the screen comparisons.. The blacks look inkier in the new one, but the CC has more grain. Isn't that desirable?

There is a tear mark or something that seems to have been repaired on image #09.

Walsh, Lara Flynn Boyle, Dwight Yoakum and especially Dennis Hopper (in a quirky, over-the-top performance); but the sum is definitely less than the total of its parts. The cast tries hard, but they can't quite overcome the deficiencies in the script and the direction. And whoever imagined that a film noir would ever feature a twangy country-western soundtrack? Worth watching overall, but hardly a film that belongs on any "Top 100 List" ... unless that list involves all the films in which Nicolas Cage does one-armed pushups on an asphalt road in the middle of nowhere.
I think Red Rock West is great. Nice hybrid of Western and noir. Cage is hilarious in it. This and the Last Seduction are the best things John Dahl did. Recently I think he directed some episodes of Justified, which fits well with these.

New Yorker Films has the rights and they may never release it.

It's a good bet these are announced Monday:

The Apu Trilogy
Othello

It appears Criterion upped the contrast on their version which seems to bring out more details and makes grain more apparent. While the SC 4k seems a little flat and darker due to less contrast and possible smoothing. Just my take on the images provided.

I'm going to see The Third Man in 4K this Friday. I'll have a better opinion then.

I sold my Criterion The Third Man for $190 on eBay and used the cash to buy the Studio Canal region free off Zaavi...

It was $31 US and I think the print quality is better than the Criterion...and there are new Features which are worth the price of admission!

I'd actually wager on Tuesday. The last couple of announcements that would normally have fell on a Monday were mysteriously delayed.

Does anyone think Llewyn Davis is still a thing? I remember he was pretty clearly in the sketch they released at the end of last year.

I personally still like the Criterion transfer. In this pic Joseph Cotton looks like he hasn't washed his face in awhile, but his herringbone pattern coat has finer detail.

I'm going to keep both my Criterion Blu-ray and my new 4K restoration StudioCanal Blu-ray of The Third Man, since I love the film, and the extras for both editions are spot-on.

I'll be trading in my 2010 StudioCanal Blu-ray, though, since the newer StudioCanal disc has all of the bases covered along with the better transfer.

Good, I would too if I had a copy. I think it still would hold it's value, even with the new Studio Canal release.
