they can't be schlock, because...look at these ratings from people you clearly disagree with!!

I haven't seen JGL in any recent films (aside from The Night Before, which doesn't count). What's he been doing?

He's in Oliver Stones "Snowden", which I believe comes out late this year.

just saw the trailer for this one today, too. it might hold some entertainment value, but the documentary from a few years ago Man on Wire was really good. I'm doubting this can top it. the line he delivers at the 1:05 mark is comically bad.

the two films you mentioned, though, are hardly "schlock"

500 days:
7.8 imdb
86% RT
4/4 stars Ebert

Inception:
8.8 imdb
86% RT

I personally liked both. 500 Days of Summer I've seen more than once. Not many movies where the protagonist is singing Pixies songs at karaoke or listening to The Smiths on his iPod, so its got that going for it, too.
500 Days of Summer was rubbish, imo. Self-consciously quirky is phrase I used to describe it in my review a few years ago. That dance sequence made me cringe.

You don't want to get me started on Inception....

Actors often keep working even if their films are scheduled right on top of each other. It's the Jude Law effect.

It's an Oliver Stone "biopic", so many grains of salt will be taken with me to the theater haha

I wonder if it does well maybe we'll see Oliver Stone's "Obama" in 2018?

Man on Wire was pretty good I agree, you've reminded me I still need to see Citizen Four

Now that I think about it though, the next best thing I can think of to a possible utopia noir would be the Bioshock video games. It probably could be argued that they're more dystopian, since everything fell apart in those settings, but Bioshock: Infinite does a superb job of immersing you in a utopic setting with a few noir tropes/conventions involved. If they make this series into some decent films, we may have what you're looking for.
Are you old enough to remember the MYST video game from 1993? I was a teenager when I played that game. I remember it being such an escape from reality when I engaged in that "game". Unlocking all these doors with all these books and such in a utopian setting, yet there were all these cavernous and dark places that could have easily fit in a film-noir setting. THIS is what I call "utopian-noir", a term I may have just invented (mind my pretense here).

I will investigate the Bioshock game series too. Never heard of that (my gaming days ended when I was about 18 or 19 years old).

This isn't the biggest Criterion purchase I've made, but it is the biggest for this few titles. And I could not be happier.

I am now 3 away from Blu-Ray completion: The Third Man, Pierrot le fou, Blue is the Warmest Color (special edition when it comes out).

I ended up purchasing all the OOP Criterion blus about 1-2 years ago (and the last slew of titles that went out of print I was able to pick up before they shot up in price). But I ended up paying $125 for The Third Man blu-ray from someone on eBay. It was pretty much in mint condition and the person even included the plastic replacement case too which was incredible. I was able to pick up The Man Who Fell to Earth for around $60, which wasn't bad either, seeing that its going for $100+ today in better than good condition. I remember when the blu-ray for Pierrot le Fou was being marked down to $29.99 on Amazon a few years ago and I bought it new for that price which was cool too (there must have been an overstock of them).

Indeed its a lot of fun (and somewhat expensive) to try and pick up all the OOP Criterion titles. I love searching for items like these and finding bargains or good deals online or offline.

Seeing that you are 3 titles away from completing the entire collection, that goes even a step much further as I have no plans of doing that!

I hate both of them, as well, especially the former as I found it to be quirky, indie nonsense.

Although he seems like a nice person, I have not seen one Joseph Gordon-Levitt film that I have enjoyed. And yes, I have seen Brick, and I strongly disliked it.

Is there still a $100 market for Third Man? Have you guys seen this?

I wish I hadn't let my CC Third Man go for such a reasonable price but I honestly didn think there would still be a demand for it now. I forgot about the "die hards" haha
If you're looking to get it still, maybe save some money and just buy the case, then put the new resto in it? I get that the point is to have a Criterion collection but kind of crazy when there's a newer disc out that bests it at a fraction of the price

@filmmusic Definitely of interest, I would upgrade because I watch Late Spring frequently (as well as Aumtumn Afternoon). Tokyo Ga would make me keep the CC disc though, even if I hated Late Spring I'd still have picked it up just for that.

Maybe Criterion would pick this up and re-release it?

edit: By the way, any predictions for Saturday?
Or it will be moved to Monday?
November is supposed to be the best month in a year, or December?

I remember hearing of MYST back in the day, but never did play it. Same with RIVEN, although I might have found a copy of that, I'll have to check. Both looked like gorgeous games; I wonder if they're still available somewhere and can still work on a modern PC...

If you do want to get into Bioshock, Infinite is the one I'd recommend the most. It's a stand-alone story in which you play an ex-Pinkerton agent entering a utopic city in the clouds. The first few minutes has you, the player, disrupt the city's peace and cause all-out havoc (inadvertently). The first game is great too, but has more of a horror/survival type of gameplay to it.

I recommend the novel The Scarlet Empire (1906) if you're at all interested in dystopian literature. It's rather obscure but incredibly fascinating. It's terrifying and very funny in spots.

John Walker is a young American socialist, active and dedicated. Yet his personal poverty, and the slow progress of his cause, leave him despondent. In a fit of depression he decides on suicide by drowning: he hurls himself off "the long pier...called the Suicides' Promenade" at Coney Island. He loses consciousness—but is revived by a man in a strange diving suit; Walker at first mistakes him for a kind of fish/man. In fact, the man is a surgeon engaged in research; he explains to Walker that they are in Atlantis, at the bottom of the sea, and gives the American a cursory explanation of the nature of Atlantean society.
