In terms of the filmmaking process, both films are exceptionally spot on.

Well, anyway I watched Day for Night tonight in preparation for the Blu-ray release and I can't even muster up the words to describe how absolutely enthralling, magnificent, and brilliant it is. 10 minutes into the film and I knew it was one of the greatest films ever made and by the time it ended, my jaw was practically on the floor.

It's really safe to say that Day for Night is able to hold hands with Fellini's 8.5 and skip down the street, side by side.
Truffaut is not my favorite director, or even my favorite French director, although I probably like most of his films a bit more than you do, and may even prefer THE SOFT SKIN over THE 400 BLOWS.

Nevertheless, DAY FOR NIGHT is a film I was lucky enough to see theatrically (albeit in the English-dubbed version) and it is the single film that inspired me to buy a Betamax way back when I was still in college and could barely afford such things, and blank tapes were about $20 apiece. I later bought the DVD and can hardly wait to get the Blu-ray. It's truly a movie for people who love movies and especially for anyone who has ever made or worked on a movie.

I like it but a lot of people seem to be put off by the opening music which does sound more appropriate for Circus of Horrors but beyond that it's well made and acted and Edith Scob is a memorably tragic figure. I don't know if it was the first but it's the best of the "restoring the beauty of; no matter at what cost" films that seemed to be around at that time. I will add that there is a scene that is very graphic for its time that might bother some.

The American Friend sounds interesting. Dennis Hopper is not someone I think of when I read the Ripley novels.

John Dall would've made a good Tom Ripley.

You can also pair it with Holy Motors for a nice double feature.

Everytime my girl makes me watch The Notebook I have to explain how she misinterprets the movie. The James Garner character is a serial rapist who preys on alzheimer's patients by convincing different women each day, via his story, that they're his wives then sleeping with them. Luckily it has a happy ending as he dies in the final scene ending his reign of terror.

The upcoming Region B release from BFI has different extras including a commentary. I plan on getting this as well, but I'm not sure which version.

I'm looking to see more French films from the collection outside of the French New Wave. I've seen a lot of the Melville ones and really enjoy those and I was looking for others with an equal amount of suspense. It looks like Wages of Fear and Rififi would be good choices, anything else?

I would love these:
[Show spoiler]

edit: Oh, I'm sorry I misunderstood you, and thought you were asking what French films we would like to see in the Criterion collection!

haha, no problem! I just realized that my post could be taken that way. There are a lot of French films I would like to see in the collection, first they just have to upgrade a lot of the dvds, I'm hoping Le Samourai is next!

Anything staring Jean Gabin. Sadly, don't see his films on blu. That is a bit upsetting because he is so highly regarded. Jean Renior films such as The Rules of the Game and the River. You can also get Studio Canal Blu of La Grande Illusion, that does star Jean Gabin and was Crierion DVDs spine 1. There are also Marcel Carne's films such as Children of Paradise, but the DVDs looks better than the Blu.

That may be one of the funniest twists I've ever heard, Bravo!

As many of you may or may not know, I am not the biggest Truffaut fan...like at all. I absolutely love The 400 Blows, but I do not particularly care for The Soft Skin, The Last Metro, but ESPECIALLY Jules and Jim.

that is awesome to hear as I have yet to see Day for Night and I adore Truffaut! don't rule him out completely as I can, at least, understand some of the criticism that is typically levied at the 3 films that you said you did not like.

First of all, compliments on your avatar. New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies is such an amazing album.

Secondly, The Wages of Fear and Rififi both have my enthusiastic recommendations. Diabolique is another strong title.

Amazing, I just re-discovered New Order a week or two ago. I downloaded all their albums and love Power, Corruption and Lies. Amazing music. "Technique" is probably my all-time favorite though after having listened to it endlessly over the last 2 weeks (can't believe I'm nearly 37 years old - my birthday is in 5 days - and I never heard this entire album in whole).

I just spent $40 on a first edition (N. Mint) vinyl UK edition of New Order's first album, Movement. The record arrived in the mail yesterday.
