If you look at Wenders' career as a whole, it isn't that remarkable. He has more misses than hits. Of course one can say the same for many other directors too, like Coppola, for example, but that's a different story.
I haven't seen as much Wenders as I'd like, but what I have seen fits your template. I'll be curious to see how the rest fit in once I get to them. (I'll reserve judgment on Wender's career until after I get caught up, as I apparently have a lot more respect for him in general.)

Could be wrong on this (I struggle to care about critical reaction and don't read much into it) but Lost Highway got middling reception. Was seen as quite a cult thing.

I've never been a big fan. But I haven't really given his films a good chance, either. So I was thinking that I would maybe re-evalute how I feel about Wes' films. Where do you guys who are fans (or even not) feel would be a good place to start?
I would probably start at the beginning, even though Bottle Rocket isn't one of my favorites, and work your way to The Grand Budapest Hotel. I don't necessarily think there's a quintessential Wes Anderson film that you must start with, as all of his films are, in my opinion, pretty top-notch. If you didn't want to go chronologically through his films, though, I would suggest either The Royal Tenenbaums or Moonrise Kingdom.

I remember Lost Highway getting a lot of bad reviews.

...it currently has a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Thanks!

I think my library is going to be getting a lot of my business in the near future.

Ladies and Gents,

November is often the #1 month for Criterion announcements as its right in the holiday shopping frenzy season and usually there are only a few titles announced in December. So some of the big titles come out really late in the year. I predict today's announcements are going to be simply...in a word: mindblowing.

Expect the unexpected!

And savor every moment!

Yours Sincerely,

J.W.

It was already delayed because of the 15th of the month coming out on the weekend.

They will be released today. I had a vision from the Criterion offices in NYC last night.

Enjoy!

My wife was a Anderson hater, hadn't liked a single film of his. But she loved The Grand Budapest Hotel and is intrigued to check out more of his work. So I would recommend it as a starting point.

A huge thank you to everyone who made suggestions on my Wes Anderson question. I really appreciate it.

I don't like feeling as though I've written someone off without giving him or her a fair chance.

Lost Highway and Fire Walk With Me were shit canned, esp F.W.W.M. Things may have changed now, but critics did not like Lynch in the 90s

The Straight Story is an anomaly in his filmography.

I just love that you don't have to take them seriously and you can sit back and just enjoy them - they don't require concentration or over thinking, yet they have so much detail and you are not spoon fed everything. Perfect balance I would say!

They are really fun

I also love how The Grand Budapest is so similar to Nymphomaniac yet they can't be anymore different lol.

They can make an effort but I highly, highly doubt it. Another label has already single handily surpassed them on the mindblowing front for the year (ahem, Rivette, Yoshida and Battles box sets) and they still have another month to announce for the year too. They can always settle for second or third fiddle though. I can't complain. Still looking forward to the announcements. But my expectations are low and my budget allotment is even lower.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE FWWM.
I'm probably in the minority here because I hated FWWM. That film was not so much of a case of the wonderfully ridiculous, but the hillariously bad. Lost Highway has its haters, but I personally love that film, and it was very much a return to form for Lynch.

As for The Straight Story when I saw this film for the first time back in 1999, I thought that it was a bit of a dissapointment... that is until the final scene. When that final scene came up, not only was I crying floods of tears, but I couldn't help but applaud Lynch. Here was the poster boy of American surrealism ending a film that was simplistic and so bloody realistic (not to mention heartbreaking)

I saw it before I had seen the TV series so not sure if that affects day judgment, I just found the film really sad and I really connected with Laura's character. Also loved the music.
