You've mentioned before your disappointment regarding what you perceive to be the lack of detail regarding the "small town aspect of the story", and I continue to be at a loss to understand. We're shown how isolated and small Holcomb, Kansas, was back in the late 1950's and early 1960's, and told how dramatically affected the population was by the shocking and unprecedented violence in their midst. What degree of specificity were you hoping for, and did you think the film should have run longer than 2 hours and 15 minutes, or were there sequences you think should have been cut out to make room for this additional footage?

In Cold Blood. Film noir fans rejoice (I'm referring to you, Owl, and you CriterionBlues). Again I will have to watch first but this one intrigues me.

Eclipse Series 44: Julien Duvivier in the Thirties. Doesn't really interest me. Sorry guys.
If you're referring to me with In Cold Blood, then you should listen to me with Julien Duvivier.

Duvivier is an unknown to a lot of people, but he is worth checking out. He influenced a lot of the great directors that we love. At some point this stuff will show up on Hulu and I would recommend everyone give Un Carnet de Bal / Dance Program a try. It is right up there with the best of 1930s French cinema (Renoir, Carné), just Duvivier tends to get forgotten aside from Pepe Le Moko.

Now if you don't like 1930s French cinema, then don't bother with it.

I first saw the Apu Trilogy back in the 90s at the Brattle Theatre (for those of you in the Boston area). Had never seen any of Ray's films before, and was absolutely astonished at how terrific they were.

One also has the option of buying (or renting, or watching on Hulu) the other three films of Ray's that Criterion has released, so as to get an idea of what his films are like.
Only difference is I how much you pay. 12$ vs. About $30-$80. I guess if you hated it you sell it for at least half of what you paid, right?

Ha. I knew Howards End's spelling, but not Don't Look Now until...well...now.

Dont Look Now is more understandable to get incorrect since in almost every other case in the US language there should be an apostrophe there because it's a contraction. For this particular title, though, the apostrophe is meant to be left out.

Thanks for that. I like with Sony as the distributor these days that the titles seem to go up on Amazon much quicker than they used to when Image Ent. was the distributor. I know that pretty much all of these titles will be included in the B&N November sale, if it takes place, but I'll still pre-order from Amazon just for peace of mind.

By the way, have you been out to Avon or Cable Car lately for anything?

Ikiru! Hasn't it been years since a Kurosawa film has been upgraded to Criterion blu-ray? This finally ends the dry spell of not seeing new Kurosawa releases on blu. So that is an essential film to own and I'll be purchasing this.

A pretty complete month I'd have to say though overall! Mind is still blown!
Last year was the last Kurosawa- we had Throne of Blood in January and then The Hidden Fortress in March.

So year and a half plus... totally overdue

I personally don't understand anyone (especially who frequents this thread) saying they aren't interested in The Apu Trilogy. I mean, that's about as close to perfect as a trilogy can be, and universally praised. I'm wondering how many people who "aren't interested" actually haven't even seen it? If there was ever a treasure for cineastes, this one is definitely top 3.

Dont Look Back is probably the second best rock n roll film ever made, after Gimme Shelter, IMO. I'm sure the new scan looks great, but most of the extras were already on the previous disc so it's not as exciting an upgrade as it would've been had the previous blu not existed.

Incredible releases for the month of November and if B&N sale pans out the same month, I may purchase all of them.

I really haven't gotten into 1930's French cinema, so I guess you can say I'm a bit ignorant. I have watched a few films from that era (The Rules of the Game and Grand Illusion are films that come to mind), but overall I don't connect with that era and film industry. (even French New Wave I can't get into... but I do love Louis Malle's work, despite him being kind of non-new wave).

Still, I'll bookmark Duvivier and research a bit. Thanks!

I guess if it's something you really want, then why not pay the asking price. It just seems such a waste to spend that amount of money on something you can't unseal and actually enjoy, that's not an insult to collectors of oop movies, because if there is something out there I couldn't live without then what choice would I have, it's that BD/DVD doesn't seem to have much of a pay off in the long run, as far as resale value.

The French Lieutenant's Woman Blu-ray REVIEW

Visually, the film is a stunner, but I am not convinced that Jeremy Irons was the right choice to play Mike/Charles. He is a terrific actor, a favorite of mine, but it seems like something is missing in his performance here. (By the way, this was his first big role).

On a related note, there are two other very interesting films that are based on John Fowles novels. The first, William Wyler's The Collector, you probably have seen already. It is out on a very good Blu-ray from Image (Sony job).

The second, The Magus, is also very unusual. It is directed by Guy Green and has quite a cast: Anna Karina, Candice Bergen, Michael Caine, and Anthony Quinn. In the United States, it is out only on DVD. The transfer is very good. It is a release well worth owning
