Region B blu-ray from Optimum (Studio Canal) looks excellent and has terrific extras including input from Thelma Schoonmaker, Powell's widow.

If there was ever a treasure for cineastes, this one is definitely top 3.

Dont Look Back is probably the second best rock n roll film ever made, after Gimme Shelter, IMO. I'm sure the new scan looks great, but most of the extras were already on the previous disc so it's not as exciting an upgrade as it would've been had the previous blu not existed.
I know it's a great film. Heck, I've been hearing from my dad for about 40 years what a great trilogy it is. I don't doubt that the filmmaking and beauty are unmatched.

But I just can't get myself excited about it. Now, maybe that's just me. I am sure it is. But I would rather a Before Trilogy. I guess it's just that I can relate to one more than another? I don't know. But that's where I am.

Does that make any sense?

Repulsion and Breathless are my favorites. I can't even explain how much I love those two movies.

Nice haul!

Excited or not, again: have you seen it?

That's sad to me, because you never know if you like something until you watch it. Not a trailer or read a synopsis, but experience the film. There's probably many films out there you'd love if you watched something outside the comfort zone for a change.

Not to mention, as a "film lover" and Criterion thread regular, I personally think people owe it to themselves to watch all the "great" films out of respect for the medium. They are great for a reason, whether a trailer appeals to you or not. It was like the discussion years back about Lena Dunham putting down The Godfather, before admitting she'd never seen it.

It's watching those films that ARE out of our immediate areas of interest sometimes that allows us to expand our horizons. Otherwise, we just watch the same thing over and over.

I don't need to watch something to know its just not gonna be for me. That's what research is for before you buy something.

Haven't seen the Apu Trilogy--nor any Indian film that I can recall.

Might have been very interested in this as a potential blind buy a few weeks ago.

Then I went on the epic bender of all blind buying benders during the recent sale and most of them turned out to be relative duds.

...I vowed no more Criterion blind buys after that.

I have not. And let me say: I don't pretend to have seen it, either.

And I absolutely HATE myself for saying "relate" in my previous post. I hate that concept more than anything in this world. And I can't believe that I -- who hates it! -- used the term. So, I apologize for that.

My interest in watching a film where I can relate to the characters is about zero. My life sucks. It's a nightmare. Why, in Hera's name?, would I want to see something that represents my life?! That's about the LAST thing I would want to see.

But, one way or the other, I will give the Apu Trilogy a chance. It deserves it, whether I am focused on it or not. Maybe my library will eventually have it. They are pretty good.

Awesome slate of announcements. Man, October and November are going to be expensive months, but fortunately the B&N sale should help to ease some of that cost. I haven't seen the Apu trilogy, but "The Music Room" and "The Big City" are terrific, which is enough for me to blind buy. I have no idea why I haven't picked those up yet. I'll probably be picking up every title in November with the exception of the Haneke film, which I don't really want to blind buy.

I do research.

But research has its limitations with blind buys.

You can read critical reviews until you're blue in the face, but you'll never really know for sure until you actually watch the movie.

I guess that's part of the excitement of the blind buy.

...for me at least.

I agree. As you already know ive picked up 3 titles I didn't really care too much for after buying & watching them.

You have picked up some really great titles, Darkness, very different and unique. And nearly all of these also have terrific technical presentations.

I think that you are going to have a really great time with them. Enjoy

And you have to tell her the real price why....? I mean does she even need to know you bought it...?

Hey, Pro-B, how do you see the stuff you do? I mean this seriously. I can tell the difference between a really good and a really bad transfer. But I always wonder how people see these small differences, these (what I would call) minor changes? Is there somewhere to learn this stuff?

Now, whether I want to learn to see it, that's a different question. Maybe I'm better off the way I am. But I'm genuinely curious. I always wonder, "What am I missing?"

I am assuming you had to get a brand new copy, used/like new is generally available for less than $40 for Le Cercle Rouge
