I'd like to add that if The New World is indeed going to be released soon, it makes sense it would come out in January in the new year. New World=new year.

Hi Aaron,

What exactly do you have trouble recognizing -- poor grain distribution, sharpening, encoding anomalies, filtering anomalies, etc? If we were in the same room it would be very easy to give you examples from different releases so that you can actually see where things have gone wrong.

On the other hand, do you have your TV set calibrated? (Or do you have a projector?) If not and your eyes are used to the poor factory settings, this could be one of the reasons why you struggle.

Let me make a suggestion: I am very busy this week, until Sunday, but next week my schedule is a little better. If you let me know what you have trouble with, I will be happy to help you with some notes and examples. How does this sound, Aaron?

I hope all is well.

Pro-B

No on eBay they're not. The only other copies on there when I bought mine were $112.00 & 120.00. Unless you want the DVD then that can be had for $40 or less.

There is a sealed copy on Ebay right now for $70 buy it now, item #161796488041. In the past 90 days 20 blu-ray copies have sold, the lowest for $46.26 & the highest for $119.99. Average selling price is about $50-75 at auction.

Definitely has more fine detail then their Stray Dog release. no contest. Stray Dog was only 3 years earlier so hopefully with some restoration effort we can someday get a better release of it.

Its fitting that Kurosawa's most prestigious film Ikiru releases along with the Apu Trilogy. Kurosawa was a big fan of Satyajit Ray.

People are born, live out their lives, and then accept their deaths. Without the least effort and without any sudden jerks, Ray paints his picture, but its effect on the audience is to stir up deep passions. How does he achieve this? It's killing me seeing how his collection is organized but if he can find stuff then that's cool for him

and I don't have mine by spine number. I like it better by year. Then I know exactly what part of what shelf to go to if I want to watch something from any certain year. Plus I have DVDs separate and digipacks are separate too.
Spine numbers don't help me

Bosley's review of Ikuru at the NY Times seems to indicate it's too long.

I read an article about Theo 5-6 years back in an audio/video magazine. He is a home theater designer by profession. I did not see the video yet. Will check that out shortly.

Yeah its common sense to separate digipaks/boxsets/plastic cases and also do the same for each company Arrow, MoC, Plain, Criterion, Mondo etc etc

I find it weird he's only seen about 200 of his collection though.... Ive seen 90% of mine.

I'm sure there have been copies that sold for less or will sell for less that's why I said at the time I bought mine it was the cheapest option.

Oh ok. I keep my Criterion Collection together, BDs & DVDs & sort them by spine in their own section. Packaging doesn't matter either, just spine order to me.

That's exactly what I was thinking!

I have half his collection and I have as many unwatched as he has seen. If you're gonna be a collector at least have it be for the love of watching film not just to have a lot. Not that I'm claiming he doesn't appreciate film

Bosley Crowther is probably my least favorite film critic of all time.

...he wrote so many negative reviews of classic films that it's embarrassing.

He was a bit of a nincompoop.

I could not agree with you more strongly. In many cases, I felt that Crowther was more interested in trying to be clever than in actually evaluating the film he was reviewing. Even when I was a teenager reading his old reviews in the library, I kept thinking, "Why did he choose to be a film critic when he hates movies?"
