Oh, I hate it too. And the way it is said today, over-enunciated for affect. And when I read it, that is the tone in which I read it.

Back on topic, Dylan is magical and the more I got into the deeper album cuts, the more I appreciated him. Lyrically he is one of the best ever, and I literally cannot wait for this Criterion to come out.

I think the problem is when you start to pay too much importance on what other people or critics think about the movies you see, it can get on the way on how you judge them, something like with new movies and hype, sometimes it is not that you want to go against the general consensus, it is just that some movies get so much praise that make you go with the wrong expectations.

There is also the opposite danger of seeing a film most people hate, so that even if you liked it you tend to give it less value, or give it more praise than it deserves based on your subjective opinion because everybody says it is the best film ever.

BTW I love Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and Sound of Music, and really hated Bram Stoker's Dracula, I wasn't even aware who directed it and couldn't believe it at the end

Also favorite Hitchcock: The Birds, although Rebecca is quite close.

Bob Dylan did not talk between songs that much when I saw him in concert back in 1997.

The concert where I saw Dylan was at a small 1,000-capacity venue in Atlanta. My friend and I were about 10 feet from the stage down on the general admission floor.

Right before Dylan took stage, we saw a bunch of people pointing up at the balcony, and, when we looked, we saw President Jimmy Carter and his entourage taking their seats on the first balcony row. Later, during the show, when Dylan was playing, I turned around and saw President Carter dancing.

When we were leaving, we walked right by a van, and I saw President Carter sitting inside, about four feet away. We waved at him before they drove off, and then went along on our way.

That was a memorable night, to say the least.

My favorite Dylan album is Blonde on Blonde, but I've probably listened to Oh Mercy just as much.

I forget which Woody Allen film (Manhattan Murder Mystery maybe?) it is but there's a very funny exchange between him and Diane Keaton regarding Last Year at Marienbad.

Back in 1984, I drove down to a college in Providence, RI to see Stevie Ray Vaughn. It was just after his first album was released, so he hadn't really made it that big yet, and the concert was in the college's cafeteria(!) There were two opening acts. The first was forgettable; the second was a blues band I hadn't heard before (but got hooked on because of this concert): Duke Robillard and the Pleasure Kings. I was standing right in front of the stage on the stage right side, and was feeling quite amazed at Duke Robillard's playing. I chanced to look over to my right, and standing in roughly the same position as me, but at stage left was Stevie Ray, watching Duke play and obviously loving it. Not surprisingly, SRV invited Duke out to jam during his encore.

More of a hip hop guy myself.

...but that album is freaking timeless.

Oh yeah. I remember that too, but like you I can't remember which movie it's from! Heh.

Backing up a little bit to the Dylan concert I went to, I have to sadly admit (boy, I feel like I’m sadly admitting to a lot of stuff lately) that I didn’t recognize most of the songs he sang. Heck, even the uber popular songs like "Blowin’ in the Wind" and "Tangled Up in Blue” were so drastically altered from the versions I grew up listening to on the radio, that it took me a while to catch onto what he was singing. A day or 2 after the concert, I looked up the set list of the show I just saw. I hunted down the songs that I didn’t already own and then burned my own CD of that complete set list (in the same order as he sang them), as sort of a self-made memento to remember the concert by. I listen to it all the time! Love it!! Now I'm familiar with the songs I didn't know before and am intrigued (is that the right word?) to go further into his catalog.

(Trying to squeeze something Criterion-related in here …) If I may sadly admit to one more thing, even though I own the Docurama release of Don’t Look Back, I only watched the 1st part of it a year or so ago, most likely stopping due to some kind of “life moment” interruption. (I don’t remember exactly why). But anyway, I never finished it. As I mentioned earlier, I’ll probably double dip on the Criterion release, although I don’t feel a need to own it right away.

Very excited about Don't Look Back! Love music from that era, Dylan being a prominent reason why. I don't make as much time for music films/documentaries as I'd like, but special releases (like I'm assuming this one will be) remind me that I should. Excited to say that it will be a blind buy.

And as for Dylan albums, I'm no aficionado, but I'd say my favorite is probably Highway 61 Revisited or Blonde on Blonde.

From early appearances, this is going to be a stacked release and easily the definitive. But if I owned the older version, I wouldn't get rid of it either.

Something more for the Dylan fans ... Last week Rolling Stone came out with another "100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time" list, FWIW. Look who's Number 1.

These lists are always missing somebody who should be there or including somebody who shouldn't be there, but when I did a brief Google search of other similar lists, Dylan seems to be at the top more often than not. And if not, he's always high on the list.

my knowledge of Bob Dylan's music is limited to the following:

I know that Jimi Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower is a Bob Dylan cover.
I know that The Beatles' You've Got To Hide Your Love Away is supposed to be Dlyan-esque or a 'response' to Dylan, if you will. It is a song that I adore, btw.
I love the song Catch The Wind by Donovan and I am aware that it, too, is in a style that Dylan made famous.
I know his real name was Robert Zimmerman. (Thank you David Bowie.)
..and I know he has a song called Subterranean Homesick Blues, but that's only because Radiohead has a song called Subterranean Homesick Alien.
oh, and the Hootie and the Blowfish reference, "tangled up in blue.. only wanna be with you."

despite liking songs that are Dylan inspired or Dylan-esque, I have never once felt an inkling to check out any of his albums. I've played in a band with guys my age and with guys who were from the generation older than me and none of them ever spoke of owning any of his albums, liking him, listening to him... nary a single reference that I can recall.

I realize he's huge. I'm not saying that I wouldn't like some of his stuff, but for a lover of the arts like myself, his presence in my life has been non-existent.
