Hopefully, a non-scalper will buy it and be grateful to get it.

I would appreciate opinions on which one people prefer. PM me if you want to keep it out of the thread, although given the fake covers and other stuff I have seen posted here in the past year, this isn't out of bounds for discussion. Change of pace, maybe? I love movie art especially when it is for a Criterion film. I am leaning toward keeping the Variant, but man do I love the deep red glows and sky on the Regular. I have to let DHM know by tomorrow night if I decide not to keep one; the money back guarantee expires in 24 hrs.

FYI, Laurent Durieux, the Belgian artist for these Godzilla prints, is the one who did the spectacular cover art for Criterion's Things to Come. That is how I discovered him.
Wow! They're both magnificent. At first, I was drawn toward the color in the English-language version. But the more I studied them, the more I began to prefer the Japanese-language version. Something about the way the small figure in the lower right hand corner is lit up really attracts my eye ... I suppose because it emphasizes the scale of the monster.

The good thing is, you can't lose, regardless of what your final decision may turn out to be!

What thread are you referring to? I've been trying to find one like this.

Here is the one I have been following lately. It posts just about all upcoming releases from multiple retailers and galleries. This is the second thread, there is an older one that filled up so this one was started and the first one abandoned a few weeks ago. You can find the abandoned thread from this one if you want. This is a discussion thread, so you will find a fair share of complainers and "ugh, not for me" comments when a new upcoming print from a retailer is announced (now, where have I experienced that before....some other thread I visit....gotta think....maybe it will come to me )

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1093503

Here is another. Not a discussion thread like the one above, more of an announcement blog with articles:

Just because something is darker than the DVD doesn't mean it is wrong. It's cinematographer approved, so the black are supposed to be like this. People REALLY need to stop comparing everything to outdated DVDs that were often times brighter than they should be. You realize just because something is in the shot that's it's not all automatically supposed to be visible, right?

Yes, society might collapse at the sight of grainy upper body nudity. I certainly hope my mother isn't reading this thread.

I got banned for posting a GIF from Requiem for a Dream which was spoiled so people wouldn't be offended.

This site is pretty strict regarding nudity and explicit images as its aimed at all ages. I learnt my lesson :P

Hey, trust me: I think some of the approaches to these things here are a bit overboard. I was just saying, I don't think that the mods would approve. What you or I think is irrelevant.

Masters Of Cinema have pretty much confirmed that they have plans to release Touch Of Zen in the near future. They've got Dragon Inn coming next month.

We have countless examples of editions being cinematographer-approved and director-approved and having all sorts of obvious inaccuracies and changes, don't bring out that argument every time I point out a problem. I really do wonder what the point of this forum is. Forgotten Dressed to Kill already?

I didn't see what you posted but I've suspended (1 week) for much less for a post in the music forum. Someone didn't like the text I posted.

Why, to complain about DNR or teal push or black crush or whatever other boogeyman du jour might happen to catch our fancy.

Are there flawed releases out there? Of course there are but once we get a new chew toy in our teeth we have a tendency to find problems where they don't exist.

The DVD looks washed out and un-natural looking. Look at the skin tone and wood color. However it does appear overly dark as you lose some detail especially the highlights on the black phone and the object (vase?) in the background.

interesting discussion. "black crush" is one of the terms that I was actually familiar with. I'm inclined to think that Bates is right, but that doesn't mean that there isn't value to what the sjconstable posted, so thanks to both of you.

I'd like to know what it means when a reviewer says, "the grain is well resolved" or "more well resolved than x" when comparing two releases of the same title.

oh, and "compression" issues.. no idea.

I always thought compression issues meant that the film looks sort of pixelated or blocky.

oh, ok. I've definitely seen that, but more so on older DVD transfers.

I thought Black Crush originally dealt with sources using the full RGB range 0-255 while the TV or player is set to limited RGB 16-235 rendering a range below or over those numbers pure black where even turning up the brightness would not show any shade/color/detail difference between the black pixels affected.

I think now Black crush has a more general meaning of anything so dark that different shades of black are unnoticeable in the pixels affected.

Maybe someone can chime in with a better explanation here.

By the way...the valid technical term is "crushed blacks".

Yeah, but "Black Crush" sounds way cooler. It sounds like a surfing-based horror movie.
