its a stretch but i hope that is it

I don't think Red Beard fits since why bother with the added human hair, although it would be too easy if the bird was just red.

When viewed at the same time, the similarities are just too uncanny not to be true.

Yes... Good call!

For my money, this is still the sexiest scene in cinema.

The region free Italian Blu-ray of Gilda that I own looks great, but I'd double-dip in a second for Criterion.

What exactly is stalling the upgrade of Le Samourai?

The dvd is still in print, so I assume that means it's not a licensing issue. Or is the blu-ray rights a separate issue from the dvd rights?

Many people believe this is Melville's masterpiece and they just released a lesser known Melville film on blu.

...so why not Le Samourai dammit?!!!!

I believe that the HD master that Criterion received from the rights holder was pretty terrible, so Criterion refused to release it. This same master was used for the apparently abysmal overseas release.

Plus she is called a canary in the film. Yeah, think it's Gilda.

My goodness Rita could bring it. What a woman.

Sad what happened, though.

That sucks. I'd love to upgrade my DVD of it to a CC BD someday.

I was going to point this out too; I believe you're right, the answer is Gilda. And as luck would have it I just imported the Italian version

I can't believe that I didn't think of the canary line in Gilda. Today's a slow day for me. That association seals the deal, though.

If Gilda is released in December, then Night and the City will likely be dethroned as my favorite Criterion title of 2015.

I think Gilda will probably be a very strong #2 for me, if it is in fact being released. It would take something utterly monumental to take down Mulholland Drive for me -- and I haven't even seen the release yet!

... or maybe from Red Hot Riding Hood, released in 1943. ??

Gilda would be the perfect capper to what's been a surprisingly good catalog year. It would very likely be my favorite Criterion release (though I have a lot of stuff yet to watch including Hiroshima mon amour) and it would probably be a strong contender for favorite 2015 release period.
