What's the meaning of the Hiroshima Mon Amour cover?

It looks like a thumbprint or something.

...how does it relate to the themes of the movie?

I've never seen Salo or Antichrist.

And I never will.

I've read about those two.

...oh I've read about them.

maybe I'd watch the latter. Salo hasn't really piqued my interest on any other level, so for now, that's not happening. I'm more repulsed (without having watched, mind you) anything by Gaspar Noe. it has been discussed here several times.. I trust my friends. not going to subject myself to that.

keep it.

Think it was a brilliant idea to paint the original cover in such an identical way. It's surreal when you realize it's a painting.

I did put it in but edit because I couldn't find a picture that matched the same size as the others I posted :P!

I love the Antichrist cover and is my favourite design for this film - it reflects the mood perfectly and the typography is PERFECT. I also love the artwork in booklet!

Now I feel guilty haha!

You are missing out - Antichrist is BEAUTIFUL, its is stunning to watch, especially the opening sequence.

It has some shocking moments and it is full of dread an misery but its so powerful. It is a dark fairly tale from the mind the Lars Von Trier and I find it hard to fault myself, but I am very biased lol.

I was about to post the opening sequence to show you but realised I will definitely be banned for sexual imagery haha. But yeah Its a very beautiful looking film despite its disturbing imagery. The sound design or the film is also perfect, it re enforces that dread an misery and doesn't overwhelm or district the viewer from the images and story, it is subtle that creeps in and messes with your brain!

I initially had the hardest time in deciphering what the cover meant. And, like you, I thought of a thumb or a hand, and decided that it's the palm. Hands are pretty essential to the film; in a post-nuclear Japan, closeness and touch--especially for these two characters--are immensely important. And so, I believe, the palm represents that. The ridges of the palm can also be seen as intricate patterns, perhaps roadways of Hiroshima. Then we have the smaller circle, which, if red, would come to represent the Japanese flag. Then we get another circle, which I take as part of the bomb; just like ripples from something thrown into a water, a bomb has successive "pulses," I guess. That's how I interpret the cover. It took me a little while to get to that conclusion, but I think it works.

Question

Ok, so to me, it seems ANYTHING with Criterion in front of it, (right or wrong), is granted a Perfect 5/5 for Video & Audio, no matter the age, the limited (initial) Audio, etc.

For instance, the upcoming new release of "Breaker Morant", gets perfect 5/5 Marks for both PQ & AQ. PQ isn't a huge thing as Director Bruce Beresford was involved (to what extent, who knows, but he Was there ), & it was a 4K restoration:

Quote:
The release is sourced from a recent 4K restoration of the film, which was completed with Bruce Beresford's involvement, and the improvements in terms of depth and clarity are substantial.

But, the Audio is another story. A 1.0 track gets a 5-Star mark?

Quote:
There is only one standard audio track on this Blu-ray release: English LPCM 1.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.

It is immediately becomes clear that the audio has been fully remastered. The mass scenes and the shootouts sound quite incredible -- see the sequence with the machine gun -- and separation is as good as it can possibly be. Depth and dynamic balance are also very impressive
So, a 1.0 LPCM track has shootouts that are incredible, & Separation, Depth, & Dynamics are substantially praised.

I'm no Expert at all, but a 1.0 track gets written up like it's the latest Action/Sci-Fi/Adventure film from 2015 with AMAZING Audio? Huh?

Lol, now please, be kind & don't slam me too hard; as I said, I'm no audio expert but I Do know what to expect on most (remastered) catalog titles. This movie is 35 years old. Am I really out of line in questioning the scoring system for any movie that comes stamped "Criterion" ?? Is EVERY movie from them That Incredible, mainly, the Audio side of the house.

We will probably hear from Pro-B himself about this, but my impression is that the audio and video get ratings according to the age and limitations of the films, so while a 1.0 track will not be mind blowing, it probably wasn't mind blowing on theaters when it first came out, so as long as it is representative of that original quality it can get a 5.0 on AQ.

Of course it is hard to know how was the Audio Quality of older movies to begin with, for example I was really surprised by the audio quality and clarity of Jules and Jim, it seems to be superior to most other movies of its age, so who knows.

For the video quality it must be something similar, depending on the type of film used at the time, even at its most pristine form, it might not look great, but if the transfer is perfect, it will be the best representation of the original possible and could get a 5.0 on PQ.

I think that if a film has been damaged due to film deterioration to the point it is not possible to completely fix, it should not be able to get 5, but I guess the point could be made that it will never look better than that in the future.

Thumbs up

Great post & I can't argue with any of it at all. As for hearing from Pro-B himself, he wasn't the Reviewer, but honestly, that is Not why I wrote what I did. I hardly ever notice the Reviewer; my main thing was how these Criterion releases never seem to get anything less than 5/5 Marks (I'm sure there are some, but they are surely in the minority, no?).

Thx for your reply
