I can't imagine how people who grew up with today's technology would react to seeing this movie for the first time, but for a 9 or 10 year old kid (me) seeing this movie in a theater for the first time back in 1964 (or so), it hit me hard, in a great way. I've been a huge fan ever since. (I've said this before, but I think this is the first Criterion I ever owned, but on DVD. I didn't have a clue what Criterion was all about at the time, I only knew that I had to have this movie).

Here's a fairly decent review:

Great...now I'm going to have that ominous piano music playing in my head for the rest of the day.

But I won't give up.

...I will never give up.

Yes, that was done for the Criterion DVD by the great Bill Sienkiewicz. Eric Skillman did a post on his, now defunct, blog about the creation of that cover.

And, Criterion still is selling a print of the Robinson Crusoe on Mars art

Looking to get some opinions. I think I'm going to sell my Criterion DVDs that come in the dual formate releases I have. I watch the Blu Rays obviously, but the DVDs just sit there and never get touched, and never will be. My question is, do you think it's worth me buying replacement cases from Criterion for $5 each? I figure it would definitely make the selling price on eBay end higher, but maybe not (probably not?) $5 higher for the most part. What do you think?

you would have to price the movies $5.75 higher than what you would sell them at otherwise in order to get your $5 back.

the math works out like this:
for a $5.75 sale, eBay will take $.58 and paypal will take 2.9%, so another $.17. that will net you your $5 back.

I can understand the desire to have a more presentable product, but I don't think it'd be worth it for you. some of the covers are out there online. you can copy and paste them into Microsoft Paint and just print them out. I actually took the time to edit the specs on the back of the Jules and Jim disc so it would read all the details for the 2014 release. I actually think it looks really good. I'd be happy to send you the file if you want it. I did the same with Tokyo Story, but it looks crappy because the cover (the old cover) was too dark (too many shades of gray and black) for me to work with.

the discs alone will sell, though, if priced right. I'd bet on it. you can probably get maybe $6 - $10 for each of them depending on the title.

Tonight I sat down to experience one of the Criterion discs I've been anticipating for several months. I had a feeling it would be something special and it didn't disappoint ... Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone. What an incredible film, a poetic and stylish ghost story with superb performances, great special effects, and just the right balance of elements, including politics, romance and the supernatural.

I've been a huge fan of the director's Pan's Labyrinth ever since I first saw it many years ago, and I found The Devil's Backbone to be eerily and gratifyingly similar, both in tone and in its theme of fantastic childhood experiences. I was thrilled, but hardly surprised, when del Toro mentioned in the supplemental features that the two films were intended to be companion pieces. That makes perfect sense.

I'm glad that I waited for just the right night to watch this amazing film. Heartily recommended! Del Toro mentions in a more recent interview on the disc that he had originally had conceived of a very different film, and that he thinks he could now go back and make an entirely unique movie using some of the ideas he had discarded due to budget constraints. I hope he does just that; I'd love to see what he might come up with.

I agree with that it wouldn't be worth it to buy the art and cases. The DVDs would still be considered "used" even though you've never watched them. It's tough to sell Criterion DVDs that are still in-print. I'd go with the discs alone.

I Finally saw Clouds of Sils Maria, and I must say I am somewhat underwhelmed, like with Assayas previous film Something in the Air, his films are starting to become just too scattered and ambiguous at some points that they just lost me, also it didn't help that due to its themes I just couldn't keep The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant out of my mind, seems too much of a coincidence to not be a direct reference, and also has similarities with Opening Night which to me both are far better movies, I don't think the movie give's us enough of Maria to really understand and sympathize with her character, or maybe it just wasn't relatable to me, I tend to love movies about theater or film, but everything felt a bit fake in this one, the name dropping got a little tedious at times.

Anyway my main issue is just that it didn't make me feel anything, while it explores many themes, it doesn't give a great or compelling insight into any of them, I guess when there are great complete films dedicated to each of the themes shown it is hard to find a movie that can top them dedicating such lower amount of time.

I think his approach in Summer Hours has the perfect balance of being a quiet, slow, beautifully shot and artistic moving film, and also Love Carlos which is totally different, not sure what to expect of his previous films, but my problem might be that those films may have raised my expectations just too much.

Edit: after reading some more, it seems people are comparing it to Persona and Certified Copy too, I own both and really like the latter, but it was hard for me to get into Persona, I already planned to give it a second chance so I might pair it with another watch of Clouds just to make sure.

I thought it was $5 for the case + $5 for artwork, and then $5 for booklet?

I would rather buy the DVD copy if you had the case + artwork tbh, makes it more official.

Thinking about it, I might even get myself cases + artwork and separate myself

I am quite fond of that cover. Maybe because it looks like a riff on one of my favorite posters - the rare Polish re-release poster for Antonioni's Blow-Up:

Like the Spoorloos cover, it just looks like colored dots when you stand close to it. But when you see it from the other side of a room, the face becomes really clear. I always felt it was a perfect fit for that title.

I actually used to own it myself, but I traded it as part of a deal for the even more rare UK bus shelter poster for Lost Highway some years ago. Fortunately the Polish poster still pops up for auction once in a while, so one day I'll probably get it again.

Would you all suppose that Criterion will release the bulk of these Wenders restorations?

The Road Trilogy is a certainty, but American Friend and Until the End... seem like strong candidates as well. Has there been more confirmation about titles that I just haven't seen?
