Seeing as you are region free, you should buy the Australian DVD of The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice. The Chinese/Bo Ying DVD has a 2 skips inherent in the DVDs.

Robbe-Grillet and Rohmer! Two of my all-time favourites.
I'd highly recommend The Immortal One from Robbe-Grillet, it's haunting and ethereal, probably the best of his films I've seen so far.

And I agree about picking a favourite Rohmer (mine's would be between The Aviator's Wife and Love in the Afternoon) - all of his films are very, very similar in style and themes, but it's really up to personal preference as to what ideas you connect with most when he chooses to explore them. May be my favourite director of the French New Wave. His entire body of work is awe-inspiring.

Got to admit, I have never watched anything from Robbe-Grillet. But I love Rohmer, and the DVD box from Criterion is one of my favorites. I sure hope they'll update it eventually (though I understand there's a pretty good French box out there?)

There are a number of technical issues with the set, but not enough to ruin any real enjoyment of what I'd probably consider to be the best box-set available on Blu-ray. It features pretty much everything he ever did, and there are English subtitles on the features. I guess it's a bit like AK100 but everything is on Blu-ray (bar the final three features for some reason). It also includes a few other extra bits of ephemera, the highlight of which is My Night With Maud tea bags!

Just cause you don't like it, it doesn't make it a terrible film - that is just YOUR opinion. Not a fact.

^ That Rohmer set is by far the best blu-ray collection I've ever bought.

This was Late Autumn. I'm probably the last person to ask about PQ, as I'm not a good judge at all. But given that, it looked beautiful. Whether that was my impression being overwhelmed by the film itself, or not, I can't say. Like I said, I'm a bad judge to start with.

The Rohmer set is extraordinary. I got it for a good price last year and absolutely love it. Of course, it is a little bit annoying that they didn't wait a while to iron out all the issues but I doubt I would have noticed them until they were pointed out to me.

Here's hoping that the content that's unsubtitled eventually gets released in an English-friendly manner.

Without searching this very long thread, what are the chances of a Criterion Ran Blu-ray or the Hong Kong Woo films? All of these are extremely wonderful films that have been in the Criterion library, and the current Blu-rays are very disappointing.

Sadly Ran may never be released and it was just shown at Cannes (4K restoration). Criterion almost got it out the door years ago:

Quote:
Criterion announces Akira Kurosawa’s “Ran”

With Ran, legendary director Akira Kurosawa reimagines Shakespeare’s King Lear as a singular historical epic set in sixteenth-century Japan. Majestic in scope, the film is Kurosawa’s late-life masterpiece, a profound examination of the folly of war and the crumbling of one family under the weight of betrayal, greed, and the insatiable thirst for power. Ran stars Tatsuya Nakadai with music by Toru Takemitsu. Ran will be available on May 12, 2009.

Blu-ray Special Edition Features:
– Restored high-definition digital transfer, with an uncompressed stereo soundtrack
– Audio commentary featuring film scholar Stephen Prince
– An appreciation of the film by director Sidney Lumet
– A.K., a 74-minute film by director Chris Marker
– A 30-minute documentary on the making of Ran, from the Toho Masterworks series Akira Kurosawa: It Is Wonderful to Create
– Video interview with actor Tatsuya Nakadai
– Theatrical trailers
– PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Michael Wilmington and an interview with Kurosawa

Received Two Days, One Night yesterday. Planning on watching it right now. Very excited. Cotillard is one of my favorites. Then, dig into the booklet.

I need very little arm twisting to add additional Ozu releases to my collection. Do you know if that Australian dvd is sold individually, or if it only come in the 8 disc box set like this?

I'm usually very good with subtitles, but for some reason I can't follow them in this film. French ones especially, I follow well. But these are killing me.

that's awesome! looks great on the shelf, too.

do you try to find reviews for the Japanese releases or do you just take a chance that the PQ isn't a total travesty?

do you have all of his films then? I'm guessing that not everything has been released on home video?

I picked up the BFI release of Good Morning/I Was Born But... I'll try to pick everything up slowly and hope that we'll get more stuff on Blu-ray. this one seemed like a good idea considering the reputation of I Was Born But... (is that in hi-def, btw?) and because the CC DVD of GM was a train wreck from what I understand.

I think all that I'm missing is the remaining remnants of "Fighting Friends Japanese Style" and Kagami Jishi. Everything else I should have if it has survived.

If I'm missing a film of his I would get whatever copy I could get my hands on and worry about quality later on. These days if I'm getting a Japanese release (like the upcoming Late Spring) it's because there's a new restoration so I've no worries about quality.

At this point I don't care whether it's Criterion or whoever. I just want that 4K scan in my hand. I own the current SC version and that transfer is a freaking travesty.

I wasn't around for that 'almost release.' When was that?

the market price for the OOP DVD has decreased and there seems to be a TON of them on eBay. they used to go for close to $60. now it seems that you can get a copy for around $30.
