And there are plenty of examples where the Criterion shows poor compression, regardless of whether it has lower, higher or the same bit rate. What bothers me the most about the My Own Private Idaho screencaps is that there seems to be a compression line along the black bars. I can only hope that it isn't as bad as the caps indicate.

I think that in order for them to fix their compression, Criterion would have to invest in some new piece of hardware, something that they're not willing to do.
I think it has more to do with how you output your files or even something with authoring. Not 100% sure where in the line of things it comes into play but I dont think it has anything to do with the equipment.
As I said, most reviews are positive and I havent seen anyone mention that theyve brought it up with Criterion themselves. I think people just need to contact them and get them to take care of this for future purposes.
If Vinegar Syndrome is able to do it Im sure Criterion can too.

I don't own the Woodstock blu-ray. I consider Monterey Pop to be an essential. The PQ is as good as it's going to look and the sound is fantastic (Just be sure to set the sound to the new restored HD).

Have you ever seen the Woodstock movie?

If so, how does it compare to the Monterey Pop film?

Haven't seen Woodstock.

Monterey is a tight 90 minute film with tons of extras and two short films (Jimi and Otis).

Default Going out of print?

Does anyone know if any of the Criterion's are going out of print soon? Is there any way to know when this happens before hand?

That would be valuable information.

...feels like insider trading.

Monterey Pop is one of my very favorite movies and it kinda plays like a more concise version of Woodstock (though it was before). Woodstock is great in its own way but, for my taste, it's just a little too much. So, for me, I think Monterey Pop is the better film.

Also, if you put the main film, the two shorts and all the outtakes together you get just as much footage as Woodstock!

Lots of good prices on Amazon Criterions lately. I'll hold off on November but I put in for Mulholland Dr.

Yeah, I thought that might be the short answer to my query.

Between this, the likely Criterion.com flash sale, and the eventual B&N November sale, people have a lot of options for good deals. Nice to see.

Sometimes Criterion will say "Hey, these titles are going out of print at the end of the month", sometimes they won't.

Well, looks to me like you got a good deal. But yeah, things go way too quickly to keep up sometimes. Definitely.

The problem is that if they let us know in advance, then those will sell immediately, and I bet a lot of the buyers will just be re-sellers waiting for the price to go up.

That is why I try to just get first the older titles they have released, just in case.

I'm trying to figure out how to search Criterion site by release date but I can't find a way to do that. Would that be just by the spine #?

No, because lower spine numbers are being upgraded to blu-ray even as we speak. Try using this resource instead:

If you click on 'Criterion' on the left side of this sites' homepage you can sort by release date. I don't think you can do that on Criterion's site.
