Good God... I just watched The Fisher King on my Criterion blu-ray. It must have been over a decade since I last saw this film. What a glorious and incredible movie.

I haven't been watching Criterion movies lately but I'm back on board again. I totally forgot Tom Waits was in this film!

So many amazingly funny scenes in this touching, poignant and emotional story. I was reminded just how Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys borrowed heavily from this film.

Don't want to buy the MoC only to get an announcement from CC, since I think there is still room for improvement in the PQ.
I haven't heard many rumors for Two for the Road, although it's possible with a MoC release, but a lot of people think that car clue is for Wenders' Alice in the Cities or perhaps the entire road trilogy.

For what it's worth, I bought the MoC version.

Let's not forget about The Who, who were pretty stunning smashing those guitars on stage at Monterey...but of course Jimi stole the show in the end....aside from Ravi of course.
Gimme Shelter is great. They really knew how to capture live concerts 40-50 years ago. It seems now that everyone is hamming up for the cameras. I prefer The Who's Woodstock performance. It was the end of the 25 minute set list and we have never gone back. They made the rock concert a viable form of entertainment.

Woodstock is the better film. It captures the festival perfectly. I can't think of a better documentary. Hell, there might not be a better movie in the 1970's. Monterey Pop, Woodstock & Gimme Shelter are all great companion pieces. One shows the culture being born, one at it's peak and one at the end. If we are talking musical performances I would say Monterey Pop is better.

Anyone think Criterion will ever do a TV release? Like a legit show, not something like Fanny & Alexander.

I'd think something like Alfred Hitchcock Presents... would be a great addition.

Is this an official JW recommendation for Fisher King? I'm big on Terry's work but surprisingly never have seen it yet...

I have seen Monterey Pop and it is great. I have seen Woodstock and it is great. Would be tough to compare them, but as it turns out I already planned to revisit Monterey Pop soon, so this might be a topic to delve into. Thanks for planting the seed, Ray Jackson.

No problem.

I starting watching Woodstock last night (it's almost 4 hours long!) and the changing aspect ratios are pretty weird.

It goes from extreme wide screen to just a tiny square on the television pretty frequently. The second one is an aspect ratio that I've never seen in a movie before. There's both vertical and horizontal bars at the same time.

The constant transitions from this to multiple forms of widescreen make Christopher Nolan films look like child's play.

I wish Criterion would acquire the rights to release Waking Life. They already release other three other titles by the same director. And Waking Life is an awesome movie that deserves the Criterion treatment. I've already emailed them about it, but maybe if others do as well, it will persuade them to get it done.

Maybe it makes it's way into the Before Trilogy box set?

So funny you mention this now. I just got a free trial of Starz and recorded Waking Life and watched it for the first time. So awesome and I looked for it on Blu and I agree someone needs to step up to the plate and release this...would be fantastic if it were Criterion! I will e-mail them as well.

This could mean Criterion will do some more un-boxing and sell Head.

Is the popular theory still that something(s) within the BBS set is going to go OOP, causing the set itself to go OOP, so they are starting to release the movies that are staying in print individually for when that happens?

The Fisher King may be my favorite Gilliam film...and most relatable. It's an absolute must-see. And an absolute recommendation hands down. Please check this out pronto.

Default Flash Sale Date Prediction

As you all know, Criterion Collection traditionally offers a flash sale each September. I was hoping that someone on this blog had the dates of the previous three (or more) September flash sales so that we could narrow down the possibilities.
