Actual honest-to-goodness Criterion-related aside:
Ben Gazzara, who plays the awesomely villainous Brad Wesley in Road House, has a notable role in Anatomy of a Murder, which is available on Criterion Blu-ray.
In fact, it's not a stretch to imagine that Gazzara's character in Road House is the same person as his character in Anatomy of a Murder, except older and meaner.
If Armageddon can be released on Criterion, then Roadhouse is certainly deserving of consideration.

A profound existential meditation on zen philosophy, often unfairly pigeon-holed as a testosterone-fueled action movie...Roadhouse reaffirmed the most tried and true aphorism in the history of western civilization:

...pain don't hurt.

On a side note, I recently watched Anatomy of a Murder for the first time on TCM...great film.

Ben Gazzara was a ridiculously handsome man back in the day.

...it's no wonder Brad Wesley was so popular with the ladies.

Well, you probably saw that they released Blind Chance, which gives hope that they actually will get to the Dekalog someday. I don't know what the rights situation is, but if they have Blind Chance, they likely have some of the other Kieslowski films from that era.

I did, and it's certainly great news that Blind Chance has an exceptional release.

I suppose I'm just greedy for more haha.

You know - I was thinking of about something, I think it would be cool of Criterion would license and release a Laurel and Hardy blu ray set. I dont know how likely it would be but that would be a welcome addition.

Even another title from the Capra Premiere DVD collection would be great !

And I think more people mentioned the same.

But I remember that at first they said "this year", well we will know for sure tomorrow, but my guess is next year, but hopefully sooner than later in the year.

Speaking of Le Samourai, has anyone here rented their HD version off of itunes? Curious as to how it looks, been tempted to just rent it myself but thought I'd ask.
Id love to be able to upgrade Le Samourai & for them to release the Lady Snowblood films. Ive been tempted to buy the Arrow for awhile now.

I'm not the pickiest PQ guy in the world, but I certainly don't recall anything that interfered with my ability to enjoy the film.

What are some awesome DVD's to buy? I've been eyeing Hamlet after I finished watching Tess and Roman Polanski mentioned it as one of his favorite movies. I have to add though that Tess is the most beautifully shot movie I have seen. Maybe some DVD's that might take a while to upgrade to Blu-ray.

Some of my favorite DVD only releases from Criterion...

"Secret Honor" (Philip Baker Hall gives a masterful performance)
"The Ruling Class" (O'Toole is brilliant)
"Brute Force" (A great film. I'm a massive fan of both Dassin and Lancaster)
"2 or 3 Things I Know About Her" (One of my favorite Godard films)
"The Bad Sleep Well" (One of Kurosawa's most underrated masterpieces)
"Exterminating Angel" (Darker and just as funny as "Discreet Charm")
"Mr. Arkadin" (The film is very flawed, but the overall package with the various cuts is incredible)
"The Pornographers" (one of the most underrated films in the collection)
"Man Bites Dog" (the blackest black comedy I've ever seen)

"Mishima" and "Spirit of the Beehive" are also great, but those are two that I think will get an upgrade soon. I read somewhere that "Mishima" is a near lock to get an upgrade in the near future. "Beehive" is one that I would think Criterion would be looking to upgrade soon as well.

Thanks! The one I bolded above, I bought and saw about two months ago. I really enjoyed the movie. Very creepy movie, too.

Yeah man, there are several scenes in that movie that are BRUTAL. That's a movie you can't show to the wrong person. It's one of those I wouldn't show to someone unless I really knew they had a particular kind of sense of humor.

I agree. I watched it alone. I read about two reviews beforehand, and I knew no one else in my family would want to see it. Tbh, there was some moments where I thought that it was actually real! I had to remind myself that it wasn't.

For sure. You never know how other people are going to respond to a film like that. It's tough to maintain an undercurrent of comedy with subject matter that dark, but "Man Bites Dog" does it well, which is a credit to the filmmakers.

Been following the prediction/hope madness for a few months now, so time to join in. I'd be very happy with more Hitchcock and Welles - in December, or any time after that.
