I'd never even heard of Becker until he died. I feel like I'm in the second half of Ikiru now.

I know I own some classic laserdiscs that feature Becker's name I'm sure of it. Even if you never heard of his name like many at Criterion they are they slaving for films for us.

For what's its worth this was posted on reddit. Though i cannot find the actual interview or anything to substantiate it, .

About Tales of Hoffman

"Thelma Schoonmaker, who was involved in the restoration, said in a Q&A that Criterion was a massive part of the restoration as well. She all but confirmed it would be released by Criterion themselves, but since this seems to be a special 1-title arrangement, don't expect much collaboration between Criterion and Studio Canal beyond this."

**EDIT** The Film Foundation site states this about the restoration:
"Tales of Hoffmann" has been digitally restored by the Film Foundation and the BFI National Archive in association with Studiocanal. Scorsese, Schoonmaker and Ned Price, vice president of mastering for Warner Bros. technical operations, supervised the restoration work, which was completed by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging. - See more at: http://www.film-foundation.org/tales....YIyQSuLa.dpuf

I went ahead and ordered the UK release. Was hoping for a Criterion announcement. This will by far be release of the year for me. Big Powell and Pressburger fan and all impressions I read say its the most beautiful technicolor restoration they have seen. Could not find the actual interview where a Criterion Bluray release was announced by Schoonmaker. However considering how Tati was handled it is not unheard of for Studiocanal to allow Criterion Region A distribution rights. I can't imagine how such a big movie this could not get a Region A release by someone.

I think this may be an old quote, or at least an elaboration of an old quote. There was also the Tati instance, which was a StudioCanal workaround. There may be potential for loopholes, but probably nothing like The Third Man.

Foreign Correspondent excepted, Warner still owns everything from their Alfred Hitchcock Signature Collection DVD box, i.e. Strangers on a Train, Dial M for Murder, Suspicion, The Wrong Man, Stage Fright, I Confess, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and North by Northwest.

Foreign Correspondent was part of a catalog of United Artists titles currently owned by Westchester Films. Warner had the rights to that catalog -- which also included the currently-licensed-to-Criterion Red River -- at the time they did that box set, but I think Shout Factory or someone like that now has that catalog (except for the ones that Criterion managed to get).

The Paradine Case is a Selznick title that has in previous times been part the catalog that ABC Films acquired, and is now owned by Disney. It had been released on DVD by Anchor Bay as part of that catalog along with Rebecca, Notorious, and Spellbound, and I have no idea why it wasn't included in the Hitchcock Blu-ray set of those films that MGM released. Criterion didn't release it, either, during the short period when they released those other three on DVD.

That's GREAT news! I was hoping the new restoration would be released in the US.

It would not surprise me if we do not get announcements today.

That said, Criterion just favorited a tweet of mine from earlier about Mr. Becker, so at least someone is behind the social media keyboard.

They also just tweeted Bergman a few minutes ago. Maybe this is a sign of a Bergman upgrade, which might be a fitting tribute to Mr. Becker.

I like the way you think! That said, Criterion announcements are almost always "After Hours."

This and the Bergman would make for a fantastic finish.

So I am correct in thinking this might be a trademark violation?
