I just checked Facebook to see if anything was posted about delay and saw nothing but a bunch of people having tantrums about no annoucements. I'd say we could forget about anything today. I think the folks at Criterion are still shaken up by the loss of William Becker.

They're posting the announcements tomorrow, because Gilda is going to be announced, and we all know how beautiful women are usually late for dates.

I certainly wouldn't mind After Hours. I didn't care for it when it came out but I would like to give it another look at some point.

The Big Clock is an absolute auto-buy though. It's one of those perfect 'late, late show' type movies that just gets better every time I watch it.

Perhaps the delay can be attributed to the fact that one of the founders of the Criterion Collection (William Blecker) passed away this past weekend:

His son (Peter Becker) is President of the company. Perhaps the company has this on their mind at the moment.

Glad to hear you had a good Criterion year. I only bought one title this year and that was Mulholland Drive have no interest in their other titles, so far.

Well I will mourn, because I am a big fan of Croupier. I never said there was a suggestion that Criterion might release it, but I hoped it was on the agenda, that's all.

Ouch! Haha even as a big fan of Gaga's, I think it's widely considered that her music videos helped reinvigorate the medium in a decaying era of MTV. Her videos for Paparazzi, Bad Romance, Born This Way (among others) were very much water cooler talk at the time.

I wouldn't have thought of music videos in the CC prior to what I'd seen about Lana DEl Rey, so I figured if she is in the club Gaga should be too! (Though Madonna is the real queen of music videos. And also pop.)

Oh man...

Maybe the fact that they decided to postpone the announcements until the 16th of September means that they will be announcing an upgrade to the John Hughes 80s teen coming of age dramedy Sixteen Candles. Or could it be that they are preparing a monster release of the 80s cult slasher Sweet Sixteen? Then again, it could be that the timing of the announcements has nothing do to with them releasing these two titles... But them releasing the action packed 16 Blocks with Bruce Willis!! Can't wait!

Fair enough. It doesn't make much sense to be "pissed off" with a company for not doing something they never said they were going to do in the first place, that's all.

I do find it odd there was no 'NO ANNOUNCEMENTS' post despite someone from Criterion being on social media sharing stuff.

So now the question is what time do they announce today? Alas, I'm guessing we have to wait until at least 4.

My suspicion (which is based on understanding how they function) is that Peter either did not come in yesterday, or came in late. I think he is crucial to announcement day and they were probably waiting for his lead. He wasn't capable of giving it, but obviously other people were working. They released a closet video and tweeted some things. My guess is whoever was tweeting didn't even know whether new releases would be announced.

It has also been a tough week in the office, not just for Peter but for everyone. If you've ever worked in an office setting where someone major has passed, it is deflating. Productivity drops. I am sure that last week they intended to finish what was necessary to announce today, but this week everything changed.

That said, I am not at all upset that we have to wait a day, maybe two, to learn what is going to be announced three months from now.

You've misread what I was saying. I was responding to the other poster being "pissed off" about Criterion not releasing Croupier this year, in spite of them never so much as even hinting that they were planning to.

Wow, thanks for sharing all of this. I loved the Gene Tierney biography on the Laura Blu-ray. In fact, Laura was my favorite Blu-ray release of 2013 (sorry, Criterion). Leave Her to Heaven is another one of my favs, and it's a great example of a color noir.

I own Where the Sidewalk Ends on DVD, and I'd love for that one to hit Blu-ray. Of course, I've been clamoring for a Criterion upgrade of Night and the City for a while now.

I've got The Ghost and Ms. Muir and The Razor's Edge both in my unwatched Blu-ray stack. Whirlpool is in my unwatched DVD stack. Soon.
