It was actually one of the final LDs that I replaced when the New Line DVD came out. The quality was quite good, but I think that the DVD is the winner.

In any event, it would be terrific if the film returns to the collection.

There is another film from Salvatore Samperi -- sadly a director that is completely ignored in the U.S. (and English-speaking markets for that matter) -- which deals with the same subject that I like quite a lot. It is called Submission/Scandalo and stars Franco Nero and beautiful Lisa Gastoni.

This is the Italian DVD, but it is out of print now:

http://www.amazon.it/scandalo/dp/B00...words=Scandalo

This would be a great film for Kino to release, as I doubt that Criterion would bother with it.It was lensed by Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor) and the soundtrack is from one of Europe's greatest film composers from the last century, Riz Ortolani (Il Sorpasso, Paprika).

Pro-B
I have never heard of this movie and have absolutely no idea what it's about.

But based on the cover alone...I plan to see it as soon as humanly possible.

Quick question: I found a couple of Jarmusch movies on Criterion for cheap (DVD though), but one of the cases is chipped and both booklets are missing. Does Criterion sell replacement cases and/or booklets for all of its titles? I couldn't find anything in the OP (other than the few replacement cases mentioned) and nothing on the Criterion site itself. Thanks in advance. I don't quite know what I'm getting into with these movies, but they were so affordable that I couldn't pass them up.

...can anyone loan me a hundred bucks?
If you keep an eye out you can find it for much less. I personally got it for $45 not even 2 months ago.

The story could have definitely been tighter, even with all the captivating meandering, but yes, opinion does seem to have shifted, but not definitively.

As I've said a few times on here before, I believe that Criterion blu-ray does not present the film as it looked on first release. If you read most of the reports when the film first came out, critics complained about how murky and dusty it looked. The new print is very clean and colourful.

The audio quality is sketchy at best and you can tell the interviewer isn't up on the label, but it is still a good listen.
Thanks.

Has Criterion hinted anything about a possible Blu-ray upgrade of their Samurai Rebellion DVD?

Looks like interviews are being conducted for Criterion's Lady Snowblood release. Marc Walkow is in Japan and he posted the following pics on twitter:

I'm pretty sure that that is Kazuo Koike in the first picture and Norio Osada in the second picture.

I had that in my cart during the most recent Arrow UK sale but decided to hold off at the last minute.

I hope that doesn't screw anything up

Best bet would be to email them. I've tried for replacement booklets before with no luck but I know others have gotten them if Criterion has any extras left.

I wouldn't know, but if ever there was a film for which it should be easy to look past this, isn't it Heaven's Gate? It is pretty well documented that the studio panicked and had there hands in what ended up on screen when the film was first released.

I've only once asked for a replacement booklet (my booklet of Modern Times came damaged), and I received a free booklet in the mail about a week or two after emailing them. I can't speak for anyone else's experience, but mine was pretty great. The cases might be more difficult to acquire, and since your copies didn't come with booklets, I'm not sure if you'll get the same result as I did. Though, it never hurts to (politely) ask via email.

Moonrise Kingdom Blu-ray REVIEW

This is a very beautifully photographed film, but it is way too abstract for my taste. I much prefer the rawness and directness of A Swedish Love Story.

If you have already seen it and liked it, then you will be very pleased with Criterion's upcoming release. It has plenty of very informative supplemental features.

Have a great week guys.

Probably wrong to ask about *gulp* DVD, but for the Criterion version of Dressed to Kill, does the DVD share the same issues with the face stretching or whatever that the Blu-ray did in it's first pressing, or was that solely an issue with First Pressing Blu-ray?

Thanks alot. Had you bought it the Criterion release would have already been announced and released.
Atleast that is how it works for me.

The arrow release got so cheap I went ahead and ordered it so I expect it to be announced for a Jan/Feb release.

Did they? To my knowledge, UA didn't actually see the last cut Cimino made until the film premiered. They objected to the length of the first cut he showed them, but they did not influence the style and look of the film.

Either way, the look/aesthetic of the was apparently not different in any of the initial releases. It seems to have changed for the blu-ray release though.

Well, it was over budget, behind schedule, and Cimino seemed to have cemented his reputation as an a##hole. The studio was panicking, considered replacing him, and wanted the film to be edited down length-wise. You might know better as I only saw and learned about the history after the CC release, but with all of the above said, it doesn't seem unreasonable to imagine that he wasn't 'done' with the film - whatever that might entail - look wise, length wise, and otherwise.
