I recently bought the Shout Factory blu-ray and the PQ definitely isn't the greatest. Scenes alternate between heavy grain and heavy dnr.

But for $15, I'm satisfied with it.

...the cover art is perhaps the coolest cover art I've ever seen on any dvd/blu-ray.
thanks, Ray! I think I'll try the English version w/ my wife and sister.

If The Naked Kiss is along the same lines, then I'll probably enjoy it.

Oildude, you have convinced me to pick it up and thoroughly investigate his filmography. I should have read more about Fuller instead of the individual film. Thanks for the input!
You absolutely have to check out Fuller's subversive western, Forty Guns (originally titled Woman With a Whip). It's packed with unexpected (sometimes shocking) moments, lots of mind-blowing Freudian symbolism, and features an incredible performance by Barbara Stanwyck who did all her own stunts ... including being dragged by a horse. It just gets better and better every time you watch it.

And of course, Pickup on South Street is also one of the greats, and is long overdue for an upgrade to blu-ray by Criterion!

any other ideas for good kinda artful or thoughtful family films?
Has anyone mentioned The Black Stallion? Also, although it's not Criterion, your son might enjoy some of the Studio Ghibli animated films, though make sure it's an age appropriate one.

I grabbed the Anchor Bay DVD from the library. a couple questions:

1) German version or English version? my understanding is that the English isn't just an overdub? or it is an overdub w/ the same actors... is that correct?

2) the screen caps for the BFI release, Pro B's 5 star PQ review, and Ebert's inclusion of the Herzog film in his "Great Movies" column have me wondering... will a crappy DVD do it justice? Anchor Bay is not synonymous w/ quality. should I take the plunge? blind buy?
I personally prefer the German version because subtitles don't bother me at all; that, however, is a personal thing. And if you're region-free, I'd heartily recommend choosing the BFI blu-ray. It's such an atmospheric, stylish film that I'm certain you'd be left wondering what you'd missed if you went with the DVD or the Region A blu-ray.

edit: I just read The Great Owl's response to your post, and, as usual, he nailed it. Summarize my response as "what he said."

I've been holding out on the MoC releases simply because they are really good at releasing boxsets. They've already released White Dogs, Pickup on South Street & Forty Guns. I expect maybe one more and then a boxset.

Hopefully Criterion will start releasing some next year. Agree 100% about Forty Guns amazing movie.

I'll keep TBS in mind. I know there is a film called My Neighbor Totoro that is supposed to be a wonderful film for all ages. I'm looking forward to seeing that myself - not just for my son's sake. like I mentioned, he's only 2, but I've already started adding a few to my collection that I think he'd enjoy.

cool. the first paragraph of Ebert's review for his Great Movies column, (and your much appreciated endorsement, too ) kinda sells me on needing to see it on Blu-ray:

"There is a quality to the color photography in Werner Herzog's "Nosferatu the Vampyre" that seeps into your bones. It would be inadequate to call it "saturated." It is rich, heavy, deep. The earth looks cold and dirty. There isn't a lot of green, and it looks wet. Mountains look craggy, gray, sharp-edged. Interiors are filmed in bold reds and browns and whites -- whites, especially, for the faces, and above all for Count Dracula's. It is a film of remarkable beauty, but makes no effort to attract or visually coddle us."

At this point, I stopped wondering if Criterion will release a domestic version of a movie that's released by an international label, be it MoC, Arrow, BFI, etc. Their releases are just as good or even better, so I don't understand why some films buffs continue to hold out on purchasing a multi-region player like Seiki which runs less then 100 bucks at Sears. They are worth every penny.

Janus Films just posted this photo.

Quote:
Based off of Mary Hayley Bell's 1959 novel, this hidden treasure follows an escaped murderer as he is harbored by a group of children who confuse him for Jesus Christ. As word spreads amongst the youth in the community, the children come to revere the convict and vilify their parents.

Harold and Maude feels very "fall" to me. I think it's the scarves.

Probably saw the sales figures for Eureka's disc, which is also why there are no plans to put out a MoC Gandahar blu-ray.

This looks fantastic (if not quite as lavish as the UK set). Regardless, this is as essential a release as there has been this year, can't wait.

Forty Guns is excellent (as is the Masters Of Cinema Blu-ray). I'd also recommend Park Row, which is my favourite Fuller.
