They are doing a screening of ONIBABA here in Lincoln on 9th pretty excited and there will also be a talk on Gothic Japanese art/films.

Pretty hyped as we never get stuff like this here, all we get are bloody Grease/Frozen singalongs.

One hell of a mash up there. I personally don't see how the cars will race on ice.

If I recall correctly, the initial American DVD release also lacked chapters per Lynch's request.

Will it lack pause and FF/rewind as well? I seem to recall that on the original R1.

Carlos never feels long IMO. It feels thorough and detailed, similar to Che, but more consistently interesting and entertaining. I think it's a phenomenal film/series.

The Chapters are unlocked once you've completed the film 100%.

Hey Pro-B, if you could Periscope the entire Mulholland Drive Blu-ray experience.... that'd be pretty sweet.

It's A Room with a View day! To celebrate, here's an essay I wrote on the parallels between this film/novel and EPCOT in Walt Disney World: https://popculturepundit.wordpress.c...ntral-florida/.

I thought this may interest whoever wants to win a Criterion Moonrise Kingdom.

Does anyone know if only US residents can participate?
I only found about these contests today.

Been taking advantage of a local theater's Roeg retrospective and was able to finally catch The Man Who Fell to Earth last night. Three films into the series so far (other two being Performance and Don't Look Now) and I continue to be amazed at how Roeg seems to never make the same film twice - in terms of style, at least. The editing here was far less radical than the others, and the narrative, for all of its complications within its plot, was fairly straightforward. You could still tell it was a Roeg film, though: the use of jarring but oddly fitting music; an abstract take on identity; sensual sex scenes that have this uncanny ability to not feel exploitive.

I expected something akin to Under the Skin. Glad that wasn't the case. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, and what exactly I'm supposed to be taking away from it. It was certainly a mesmerizing experience, and not once did I feel its runtime. Bowie, for how coked out he apparently was, was quite the presence.

Now I'm in that unhealthy "I need that OOP blu in my hands now" phase.

and this...

You'll feel much better in the morning.

It's definitely a smarter move to put the ~$100 toward a region free player and (imo) the superior disc. You can get the blu for under $15 usually. I can't stand behind the Seiki though, they'd be better off putting another $30-40 into the investment and getting a Sony or LG. Either way this option definitely will be better unless you just have to have the criterion for the brand purpose

Seriously?! What is it with American companies bending over for illogical requests from Lynch? How come Euro studios releasing his movies don't have to deal with that crap?

It wouldn't surprise me if the overall performance is better from one of those two manufacturers. What made me uneasy about buying something other than the Seiki is that the other players are tinkered with in order to be all region. With the Seiki, all you have to do is know a trick in the set-up menu - it will play all regions straight from the manufacturer.

Don't think Shell is serious...

Also, I don't really think it's illogical to request that there is no option to jump around the film. He would rather you experience his work as one piece in one sitting. To me there is logic in that, especially with a film such as this, and at least we know there is actual participation from him if it says 'Director Approved'. It isn't new either, the releases in the US that he presumably signed off on had no chapter stops as well. I personally don't see why I'd ever need anything past a ff/rewind/pause on this, it's not like I'm going to have to stop this film mid day on a Sunday to finish baking my cookies and come back to it Monday morning.

Definitely, it's super cheap and you just plug it in. I have one set up in the bedroom and have used it sparingly. However the added brightness/sharpness settings and overall performance of it makes me weary to recommend it when I've spent a little bit more and have gotten a much better player with warranty. My main player is an LG that was around $40 more. If I can get a 3 year Square trade warranty I'm not really concerned with the tinkering that had to be done, if anything goes wrong it goes back. Though either option would be a smarter investment than throwing down $100 or more on the CC disc.

yeah, the Seiki is strangely temperamental. something odd seems to happen every once in a while. last night, the main menu froze when I pressed play to start the movie. I powered it off and back on and everything was fine. when and if this one dies, I'll probably get one of the few that you are talking about. I think that the shop that sells these is in the Chicago 'burbs. they might even have a storefront location.
