Chantal Akerman passed away. She was an art cinema pioneer and we lost her far too young.

I'm gutted about this. Akerman was one of my favourite filmmakers, with Jeanne Dielman a top-ten of all-timer.

Jeanne Dielman is near the top of my list for films I desperately need to see.

RIP

That's some serious high praise. I ordered it with the Cinema Series Dracula release earlier. I hope it's not as tedious as Amazon reviews made it out to be.

What a shame. As an aside, I still haven't seen any of her films.

I loved Dark City when I saw it at the theater back in 1998. When The Matrix came out the following year, all of my friends were raving about how original it was. I thought that, while The Matrix was a great movie on its own terms, it was simply a more explosive version of Dark City.

I have not, however, seen Dark City since that theater viewing in 1998, though, and I'm looking forward to revisiting it at long last. This time, I'm sure that I'll be more focused on its neo-noir aspects.
Very under appreciated film IMO. The film is one of my top scifi films. Its filled to the rim with ideas and the dark noir like photography and sets are amazing. Extremely moody, stylish and dark. I think it still holds up extremely well.

I believe he is referring to Dark City not The Matrix.

The 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies were forgettable. I just remember Monica B. was in them and looked good.

I always thought of you chopped off 1/3 off the 2nd movie and 2/3 off the third movie (basically every scene that takes place in Zion) there is a decent single sequel buried in there.

Looks like no flash sale today? Haven't seen any of those usual maintenance screens on Criterion.com....

The October sale was on a Thursday last year so maybe not that far off.

Last night I watched Red for the second time.

I knew it was really good the first time I saw it, but something about the second viewing really unlocked the power of this great movie.

I was able to process the story much better.

A part of me wonders if the whole thing was
[Show spoiler]a dream the old man was having towards the end of his life.

There's too many coincidences that establish a parallel between the judge's story and the young man's story.

Agreed 100%. There are some really neat scenes in both and a ton of filler. Seems to be a reflection of Studio's today who care more about sequel potential then making a good movie. Taking scripts/stories that would make one great movie and spreading them out over 3.
