I was wondering:
Since all Blurays of the year have been announced, what would you consider
the Criterion release of the year?
(based more on the title)

I have a hunch what most people will pick since it was much anticipated, but for me it's
Room with a View (though I don't have yet the Bluray in my hands. It's on the way)

Hmm this could go a lot of ways:

-A Room with a View and Mulholland Drive are two of my favorite movies, so the fact that they're going CC, within weeks of each other, has me beyond stoked. Adore the presentation and special features on Room, and from the review on this site, I'm sure I'll love the Mulholland package as well.
-Valerie and Her Week of Wonders and Dressed to Kill are two movies I had never heard of prior to their Criterion announcements - so those are "releases of the year," as far as me being introduced to two movies that I have come to love
-Haven't seen it yet but am definitely looking forward to the Apu Trilogy for the sheer feat of restoring into what everyone has raved is really terrific video/audio quality. So that's a "release of the year" as far as a tremendous accomplishment on the CC's part.

So there's my 5 nominees for release of the year...

I might consider that as a blind buy next month.

How would you describe it as a movie?

Good?

Great?

Classic?

...horror feel to it?

Am I the only one who kept thinking that the opening bars to what I assume is the theme to Charulata (since it was played multiple times throughout the film) was The End by the Doors?

No....Only me? Lol

I know this movie was made way before the band but it sounded exactly the same for about the first 10 seconds.

I kept waiting for "This is the end...beautiful friend."

It kind of made me chuckle.

I personally loved it. The pacing just right, it didn't feel rushed or too slow if that makes sense. It has a great finale that is very memorable and the film builds up to this really well. I loved the story, albeit was simple but it didn't need much more than that tbh.

The cinematography is top notch and every shot is beautiful and memorable a very beautiful black and white film and the scenery does feel like another chrarctr in the film.

I wouldn't say it was scary, but it has some very eery and creepy moments, the soundtrack works well with the visuals to achieve this, and its quite a subtle soundtrack, its easy to not notice it, only because it blends so well in the story telling/visuals. I would also say it wasn't exactly a horror in my opinion (although you could argue some scenes would fit that 'horror' title), but it has some very nice supernatural themes to it which aren't in your in face like modern day supernatural films.

I cant remember how long it is but it never felt long or terribly slow and there were no real boring parts. I can't really think of a film to compare it too tbh (probably Kuroneko? but same director so don't think that counts lol), In a way you could say its similar to The Innocents, beautiful cinematography, subtle ghost themes with haunting imagery.

If you love a film with supernatural/gothic elements then I would recommend this film, not sure what else to say haha. I am so crap at writing so hope this makes sense an helps lol...

Both Room With A View and Dressed to Kill are among the new titles at Costco stores, $19.99. See the "Current Costco Deals" thread for more (Posts #2 and #3 are kept up to date with sightings).

I'm pretty sure this new interview with Guy Maddin just let it spill that The Graduate is indeed coming soon from CC:

"It certainly wasn’t the first time Guy had been at Criterion, his Brand upon the Brain! and My Winnipeg being part of the collection. And as we peeked in on restoration artists working over an image of a young Dustin Hoffman basking in the sun, someone remarked..."

A Hoffman commentary track would be great. Otherwise, I don't think I'll double-dip.

I have seen one of them and it was so-so (The Woman Who Dared) and plan to enjoy the others soon.

Someone asked about the BAGGU. I got an email yesterday that it is being shipped separately, and a friend got the same email. My guess is they ran out.

Onibaba is awesome. First saw it in the early 90s when a bunch of us were perusing the video store for an offbeat creepy party movie. Rented the VHS and even though I was under several influences the imagery from that film really stuck with me. Couldn't find it again (remember) for years until the Criterion DVD came out. I love Japanese horror from the 60s and 70s, this is one of my favorites. Salivating at the thought of them releasing it on blu.

And watched the new Dressed to Kill disc last night, what a great film - very entertaining and "cinematic", might have moved ahead of Blow Out as my second favorite Depalma behind Carrie.

I received one with my first large order, but not the second. I emailed Criterion and they promptly replied that it would be shipped separate. I thought maybe they just missed mine, but sounds like they probably did run out.
