I do hope Criterion gives us some Pre-code films. A personal favorite of mine is The Story of Temple Drake but there are so many good ones to choose from.
I'll take Red Dust with Jean Harlow and Clark Gable. Too bad we will never see the outtake when Jean, famously doing the nude bathtub scene, stood completely up and said "This one's for the boys in the lab"

Red Dust is another example of being able to compare a pre-code original with a code enforced remake (Mogambo).

My favorite scene in Red Dust is Harlow scraping the bottom of the bird cage and yelling at the bird "watta you been eating?......cement!"

I wonder if The Fortune Cookie or A Kiss Before Dying (1956) are possible tomorrow. I asked about them a few months ago in the Kino Studio Classics thread and was told by MisterLime that Kino had one and another label had the other and both seemed to be moving toward late 2015/early 2016 releases.

I don't know that Criterion is that other label but The Fortune Cookie would be an obvious fit.

Though I think I would actually prefer CC release A Kiss Before Dying and leave The Fortune Cookie to Kino. Like I said, TFC would be a great fit but AKBD would really benefit from a full-blown restoration. It pops up on TCM from time to time and I can't watch it because I'm always too distracted by thoughts of how good it could look.

I know Linklater's Before Trilogy is a possibility at some point. Does Criterion actually have the rights or a close association with the studios who have the rights for the three films?
Also, any chance we see the Rossellini's War Trilogy soon?

I have not seen any of those six films and will hold off if we may see them in 2016. However, if it is longer, then I may pull the trigger and replace down the road.

A Kiss Before Dying sounds like a good fit for Kino. If I had to bet, I'd say The Fortune Cookie is with Olive, but I'd be happy to see it (or any of the following Wilder films) go to Criterion:

Five Graves to Cairo
The Lost Weekend
A Foreign Affair
Love in the Afternoon
One, Two, Three
Irma la Douce
Avanti!

Hell, I'd be happy if anyone released any of them.

Great. This will now free up time for their IT clowns to fix the known free express shipping issue impacting some members (like me) - also ongoing since the site revamp in July. It's only the extra 10% in-store on Criterion and other movie sales that keeps me paid up.

It was also the only title I ordered that didn't come with a sticker on the cellophane, which heightened my suspicion that the shrink-wrap wasn't the original. I'm not especially happy with the idea that I'm going to have to pay return postage.

The other 12 discs I ordered were perfect. :-)
To follow up on the above whine ... excuse me, I meant to say "post" ... I just received a gracious email from Criterion. They apologized for the disc I received, and are sending me out a replacement free of charge. That is what I call outstanding customer service, and that is why I am a rabidly devoted Criterion fan. I've never dealt with a company that was so consumer friendly. Three cheers for them!

The Story of Temple Drake is a masterpiece. I haven't seen the 1961 remake starring Lee Remick, Sanctuary, although she's an actress I've always admired. I understand that the remake doesn't hold a candle to the original.

I would love for Criterion to be able to license some of the pre-Code titles from Fox, Universal, and Paramount ... the ones that never show up on TCM. There are so many intriguing titles that I have yet to see, like Hush Money with Joan Bennett, Ladies of the Big House starring Sylvia Sidney, Tarnished Lady with the inimitable Tallulah Bankhead, and The Bad Sister with Sidney Fox and a very young Bette Davis. And I'm forever hopeful that someday a print of the "lost" film, The Warrior's Husband with Elissa Landi, will pop up and be made available. These might all prove to be dreadful ... but we'll never know until they're put into circulation again.

That was a glib way of saying 'flip a coin, you can't go wrong with either'.

If you need a tie-breaker though, I don't know what time it is where you are but Thief has more of a 'late night' feel than Badlands.

I am getting the vibe that we may be getting another Fassbinder tomorrow. I hope it is Chinese Roulette, but I will guess Fox and his Friends.

Default Bold Prediction

For one of tomorrow's releases, I am predicting a box set. It will be called Scorsese: A 20th Century Retrospective. It will include the following films: Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (representing the 1970's), After Hours (representing the 1980's), and The Age of Innocence (representing the 1990's). As a bonus, the supplements will include No Direction Home: Bob Dylan.

I would like this very much, but I'd prefer Twilight Time to release this.
