I was being facetious, I really don't think it's that good.
It's funny, because anime fans will probably eat this right up, and this could be one of criterions best sellers this holiday season...

I figured as much. I wasn't quite sure because "masterpiece" is used all the time in this thread.

Lady Snowblood is a given the only question is when will it be announced. I went ahead and got the UK set because I'm impatient . Another case where I might double dip depending on what Criterion bring to the table.

I saw the trailer for this years ago, and could see right away its your standard trash japanese anime stuff, but with live action... kind of like a really really really REALLY bad bad bad who framed roger rabbit... but instead of the whole 'toons existing with real people' premise, they're framing it around that silly japanese cultural thing, where there's little creatures that are spirits. like, some old table lamp has a spirit that is attached to it, or something retarded.

(no offense to anyone who appreciates and enjoys japanese culture, I just think the whole thing is superstitious garbage, sorry)

could be totally wrong, maybe jellyfish is a masterpiece?
Aside from the merits or lackthereof of the film itself, I'm guessing Criterion have identified Takashi Murakami as an important artist, and they want to release his first film.

Probably similar to how Tiny Furniture ended up in the collection.

Between "perfection", "masterpiece" and "epic" -- those three words have been so overused these days that they've lost meaning and credibility to be taken seriously. That's why I don't rely on reviews or what other people say. It's also why I blind buy.

Anyways, pretty hyped for (hopefully) today's announcements. I'd love to see a WCP volume 2.

Funny thing is, Criterion turned down the opportunity to release Silence of the Lambs, because the MGM disc used all (or most) of their previously produced special features. They said a PQ upgrade wasn't enough to justify the cost. But they think the same PQ with extras IS worth it. To me, they have it backward, but I guess it all depends on what makes a title sell or not.

Yeah, his work is astounding. We totally need more *quality* pieces of high class art from him, like lonesome cowboy.

definitely.
for sure.

Pretty judgmental of so many things and you haven't even watched the film.

Sorry, but when it comes to most modern anime, I'm extremely judgemental. For one, all the tropes that are thrown into literally every anime that's come out of Japan in the last 15 years is painful for me to watch. It's beyond culture, actually. Because theres lots of japanese movies I enjoy, just look at my collection... but anime presents everything so distastefully. And Jellyfish eyes looks like the same crap.

I'm really jelly of your arrow collection, btw. And I was using the word 'masterpiece' facetiously. I also think it's ridiculous how the word gets thrown around so much.

I have been watching and really enjoying her series Girls, and while I am not a fan of Tiny Furniture, they probably saw her potential, hopefully the same will happen with Takashi Murakami, as a sequel is supposedly already planned.

I always takes everyone's post tongue in cheek. Too many white knights always riding into the forums to protect the honor of boutique labels/movies or anything else that gets slighted. If someone is passionate about their opinion or likes to use spicy language it's a plus in IMO.

So is the Criterion announcement today or are we just speculating to get my hopes up and have me on the edge of my seat for days?

all this talk of anime and recently watching land before time is making me have a thought... it would be really neat to see a release of secret of nimh on the criterion label. supervised by don bluth of course.

The Sony disc has no supplements, otherwise it is a nice disc.

IDK seems like a wide canyon between being passionate about ones own opinion and slinging hyperbole and setting up strawman to make a point.

Anyone here ever buy from eBay seller " Mediablasters " ?
They have 2 brand new Criterions I want for only pennies more than what next month's B & N sale would cost me with sales tax.

I've e mailed them, asking if they use a sturdy box to ship in, since these are Criterions, but thought I'd ask here as well.

Thanks in advance.

I assure you that both Roger Ebert and Pauline Kael used those words hundreds of times. If you’re reading them here too much, keep in mind that nobody (outside of Pro-B) is a professional film reviewer and their vocabulary may not be that expansive.

I’ve bought from them many times. The disc will come in a paper bubble mailer, I’m sure. If you buy multiples and try to coordinate having them sent together, I don’t think they have the business set up in a way that can accommodate your request.. if that last part makes sense.

Based on the number of items it looks like they have sold I doubt you will get much of a response. Looks very legit to me.
