Though one 'inventive' technique was not very good the film as a whole really felt made by a director with some experience. A couple of great sequences here and there and really good cinematography. Gardner did a amazing job as did the supporting cast. Definitely one of the better 'cult' films.

Anyway being a big fan of Night of the Hunter, Laughton's only directional effort, and always requesting Criterion release Peter Lorre's only directer credit: Der Verlorene I wanted to ask the Criterion community if they know of any other one time directional efforts by major stars worth seeing?

Would make a interesting boxset theme if you ask me.
Well, there's One-Eyed Jacks by Marlon Brando. Whether it's worth seeing or not, I can't say.

I don't generally like westerns, but I loved that!
I'll definitely buy it on Bluray, now that I've heard it's coming.

Ha ha! That's pretty cool. All I see, though, is Bill Murray on the phone, but that would explain the feeling many have - that LIT is littered w/ memorable scenes.

Prior to scrolling down further, I thought for sure you were echoing my sentiment by saying that Bill Murray on a hotel fun is about as exciting as it gets. That seems about right.

Actually, I did receive my Barnes & Noble Christmas mailer this morning, containing two coupons, each good for "20% Off Any One Item." They expire on November 15, which means that I'll have 6 days in which to pick up my first two Criterion titles during the 50.0125% off sale (you people have been ignoring the impact of that extra penny), which begins November 10.

I received two in my name today and two in my wife's name.
Sometimes I get them and sometimes I don't, but today was a great day.

I may cancel my pre-orders with Amazon so I can use these to get blu-ray complete.

My two 20% coupins will get me Mulholland Drive and Moonrise Kingdom, and I'll use the Black Friday coupon on The Apu Trilogy.

How much percentage has been the Black Friday coupon in the past years? I am thinking it will probably be better to cancel my Amazon preorder of The Apu Trilogy and wait a bit more for B&N, but only if the coupon can be used online for non-members, which I kind of remember being the case on past sales.

I don't care what Sofia Coppola's views are on that society, because I just absolutely love this film, and its a work of art, if not a masterpiece. If it came to Criterion, I'd be floored.
Yes it is, that opening shot of Scarlett's ..... Joking aside, it is a wonderful film but it's one of those movies where I feel like reaching through the screen and slapping her husband because he's putting his work first; her second! I mean really?! Same thing with Jimmy Stewart in Rear Window. Grace Kelly is madly in love with you and you push her away! At that point I felt like breaking his other leg.

I read this and ran to my mail box to only be disappointed. Maybe tomorrow.

That happened to me as well, including no email coupons. I had to call BN and complain that I wasn't getting them. They ended up deleting me from their email and address list and then adding me back, even though I was a member. Whatever they did worked and I started getting them again. May want to try to give them a call... might work for you.

Hope to get mine in the mail tomorrow or so.

I ended up getting my mailer of coupons today as well. I'm not sure exactly what I'm planning on using them (the two 20% off coupons) for, though one will probably be used for a book and then the other for a Criterion box set (maybe Jacques Demy or David Lean/Noël Coward).

I did not get any mailer coupon this time...yet...

But I got one of those anniversary coupons (20%) by email which is valid from 10/16 to 11/15.

There are about 4 stores in the metroplex which will take that coupon and a store I frequent is one of them (it's also closest B&N from home)

Yes. I agree wholeheartedly. There are so many unlikeable characters in that movie, but yet, as ignorant and self-important as some of those characters are with their careers/art, it brings an air of realism to the story, and that makes it a film people can really relate to. It's also a story that bridges two generations between Bill Murray's character and that of Scarlett Johansson's, so at least the movie doesn't believe in "Ageism".

What are the dates for the sale again? I only need to buy Ikiru but it doesn't come out until 11/24.

It starts on November 10th, but we haven't found an ending date yet. It usually runs two or three weeks, though.

Thanks, just did some digging on old B&N sale threads and this is what I found:

2013: 30% off coupons both for online and store on Black Friday, but the online code couldn't be combined with Criterions.

2014: 30% off coupons both for online and store on Black Friday, but this time there was no restriction for Criterions.

Both codes were generic from what I read, so can be used by non-members, but still only once per account, or per email address.

So anything could happen this time , but hopefully it works the same as last year.

Would be nice to get The Apu Trilogy for around $38 after taxes , less for those with membership and a store near.

What was your first Criterion purchase be it dvd or blu and was it a film you had seen before or a blind buy?
