That reminded me of how much I want an upgrade of Vampyr. It's still one of my favorite examples of Criterion deluxe packaging and extras.

I think it's your choice of terminology that is confusing me.

Region 1 = dvd
Region A = blu-ray
Region 1 and Region A have different geographic areas

First Criterion was Great Expectations on DVD. One of my all-time favourite films. First Criterion BD was The Leopard as a blind buy.

My first was The Seven Samurai DVD, purchased almost immediately after watching it for the first time on a worn-out VHS rental.

Default First Criterions

My first DVD and first overall Criterion was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

First BD, pretty sure I bought Seven Samurai, Videodrome and one other... Maybe Charade. This happened to be during a B&N sale.

All were blind buys at the time.

Carrie (1976) laserdisc. I bought it cause a guy who worked at Suncoast said Criterion was the best and put out everything in OAR. I was hugely disappointed when it was full frame anyway. I also learned what an audio commentary was.

No idea. I had many titles on Laserdisc in the early 90s - Raging Bull, Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Ghostbusters, Forbidden Games, Citizen Kane, King Kong, Jules & Jim, Coppola's Dracula, Repulsion, The Killer, Robocop, Spartacus, Brazil, Taxi Driver, Blade Runner... can't even remember them all.

The Thin Red Line
I learned about Criterion through this film, because I loved it, and of course I was expecting the Bluray to be released.

Too late, but I just saw on Criterion facebook page that Bill Murray was answering questions via Reddit 3 hours ago, here is the link if someone is interested in his answers:

I asked him if Lost in Translation or any of his other artsy films will be entering The Criterion Collection, but I didn't get a response.

First Criterion DVD - Spartacus, bought sometime in the late 2000s. My only Criterion on DVD.

First Criterion Blu-ray - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and Paths of Glory, bought at the same time during the November 2010 sale.

None of these were blind buys.

First Criterion blind buy was also during the 2010 sale - Paris, Texas. Ended up loving it and blind bought 19 more during the sale. And so, from small beginnings, it began.......

My first Criterion watch on any format was Hiroshima Mon Amour. It was also my first 'art ' film. Have been a fan of both since.

My first Criterion: Fishing with John on DVD (purchased in 2004 or 2005).

Didn't know or care what the Criterion Collection was at the time.

Probably took another 5 years until I bought my second Criterion (I think that was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas).

And then 2 more years until my third (Naked)...and then I went MAD ... and now I'm up around 240 Criterion films in my collection.

So roughly, half of my blu-ray collection are Criterion blu-rays that I own.

I've long known about the Criterion Collection, and wanted to start collecting, but I never really had any place to buy them from or the money to regardless until just recently. I've only ever bought them on blu-ray (I do plan to pick up an eclipse set during the coming sale, but I really wish they'd release some of them on blu-ray so I wouldn't have to worry about how easily dvds are damaged in comparison) but my first Criterion was House. I'd seen part of it and thought it was hysterical, so I figured I might as well grab it during a sale. I'm a fan of Japanese cinema anyway, so it wasn't exactly as off the wall as it would be to some others. My first blind buy was The Night Porter, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Now, almost a year on I've snagged a few from the previous sale as well as snapped up a few really good deals here on this forum. I have a big list I'm going to buy for myself during the sale and I sent the remainder of my current wish list to my family so they can buy them for Christmas gifts. I won't get everything on the list from them, but it'll be a good chunk to add to the already nice stack I'm going to pick up for my own. All said I'll have rounded up about 50 criterion films total in the span of a year, which isn't half bad for a fledgling collector.

I'm starting to branch out a bit now too. When I started I was focused on picking up Japanese films, plus the Wes Anderson releases because I love his stuff. Since then I've picked up a few classic English titles, as well as a few in Swedish/Dutch/French. My new list is going to have a few French titles, as well as a handful of Swedish films (namely Bergman) and some more American film, like the Cronenberg releases. I'm still working on some of the Japanese films I want, but now that I've picked up a bunch I want to start expanding my horizons into the colorful, crazy world of European cinema.

I'm eagerly counting down the days until the sale because I'm really excited about getting the Jacques Demy box and Kwaidan in particular, and hoping that someone is really nice and gets me Three Colors for Christmas along with Belle de Jour. My biggest problem is that there's so much that I want to own from the collection that it's just not possible at this point, and most of the titles I'd like to own aren't ever going to be sold on the trading forums because they're keepers for most people, so I have to budget and wait for these sales to pick up a chunk and then hope for the best in the off season.

I am pretty sure my first Criterion release was the their Trainspotting laserdisc (the one with the inlay with translations from Scottish slang to plain English). Either that or the huge Brazil box, which I paid a whopping $230 for back in, I guess, september-october 1996, on the day it was released.

Either way, I had seen both before, and Brazil was actually one of my favorite films, which is why I had promised myself to spring for the box set once it was released (it had been postponed several times). Was a college student at that time, so I had to survive on oatmeal for the rest of the month. Totally worth it!
