Watched Island of Lost Souls, Eyes Without a Face and Seconds this week. All 3 never cease to be thought provoking. Great stuff.

Not to the same extent, but when people have never seen Godfather, Raiders, Jurassic Park, certain Disney classics, or watched classic ST it always feels curious since they've been part of my life forever.

Back to TBS -- I love it, but I've always thought it was an odd 2 films with the first half and second half have totally different textures. The second half always reminded me a bit more of an extended Cast Away (probably vice versa given their ages).
Yes. I much preferred the first half and was hoping there would be more of the surrealism with the boy and horse on the desert island and how their relationship was extended. This is an astoundingly beautiful picture. Some shots and sequences are just jawdropping and breathtaking. I think some moments and scenes were a bit contrived though, and rather predictable, but overall this is a really beautiful movie.

Should have been the farting scene from Fanny & Alexander

Island Of Lost Souls is a great release, but Seconds is even better and I would really recommend it I'd never seen Eyes Without A Face, though.

Sad news. Maureen O'Hara has passed away the age of 95.

Definitely sad news about Maureen O'Hara. She did such great work in The Quiet Man (1952), How Green Was My Valley (1941), McLintock! (1963), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Miracle on 34th Street (1947), Jamaica Inn (1939), Rio Grande (1950), and Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962).

I honestly don't ever remember them doing anything. Black Friday is usually within the period of the Barnes & Noble sale so we're all usually too preoccupied with that!

B&N allowed the reusable 30% Black Friday coupon to be applied to the sale price which was pretty awesome. But I kind of felt guilty using it so I only used it once and without my member discount.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but several people are selling 12 month subscriptions to Hulu Plus for under $15. This can also convert to 8 months of their commercial free plan (for tv shows). That's an absolute steal for the amount of Criterion titles available on there.

Always nice when something arrives in the mail and it exceeds your expectations....

I think it's time for more Kon Ichikawa in the Collection, or at least some upgrades.

It's pretty amazing that Altman had "Quintet", "Health and "Popeye" right in a row. All three were just huge bombs, although "Popeye" is great IMO. I think he mixed in "A Perfect Couple" somewhere in that 79-80 time period as well. "Health" is the only Altman film I haven't seen because it's completely unavailable on home video. I think the studio sabotaged that film on purpose if I remember correctly and made it basically impossible to see.

A dream Altman box set for me would be "McCabe", "California Split", "Images", "A Wedding", with upgrades to "Secret Honor" and "Short Cuts". One of Altman's most underrated films, "Streamers", is with Shout Factory. I'd love to see them upgrade that to BD.
I'd add "Gosford Park" to that set. That's Universal, no? (USA Films) So Criterion could release it if they had it.

Sad news indeed. While reading up her via Wikipedia, I checked out her filmography. Her filmography page lists her films, with forthright comments on each by Ms. O'Hara herself.

A rare and beautiful talent. And no, they're not making them like her any more. RIP.

Ooh LOVE Gosford Park. One of the many terrific films of 2001 (in the Mulholland Drive, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Moulin Rouge, Donnie Darko, Harry Potter 1, Lord of the Rings 1 club)!

That's a really good club you have there. May I add "The Man Who Wasn't There", "Black Hawk Down" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" to it? You know, come to think of it, 2001 really was a good movie year.

Today I watched Blind Chance, while I started having a bit of problems with the first story, mostly because I am not too familiar with the history of Poland at the time, and I didn't expected it to be so overly political, it started getting better with the second and third story, It didn't seem like they were just different scenarios of what could have happened, each iteration added to the character and to the situation of the country complementing what happened in the other timelines very effectively.

In a way it kind of reminded me to a game I am currently playing called Life is Strange, where you can take a decision and see where it takes you, and if it doesn't work you can rewind time to try another decision and getting a better outcome each time, if anyone here is interested in games I can't recommend it enough, is more like an interactive movie, and the story is great, it even has a kind of Twin Peaks vibe in the first chapters, although I have not finished it yet.

I think in the end it was worth blind buy, It isn't as good as Kieslowski more known works but it still gives some small glimpses of what he would more successfully accomplish on later works, I have yet to watch all extras, but one thing I would have liked is if they had kept the original cut on the only censored scene which could not be restored, while we have the audio it still takes you out of the movie to see a message like that.
