I should probably start importing from the B&N website during the sales.
Any canadians here do that? I mean, with the conversion rates, and shipping costs, its still only like 33% off, but that's still better then nothing. but yeah, any canadians here have any experience buying from B&N's website?

I've been straight up buying criterion blus @ stupidly high import prices for quite a while, so bulk buying some blus @ 33% or more off sounds like a really good opportunity at this point.

considering I've spent over $1500 on criterions the past couple of months. really wouldn't be a bad idea. lol

Will you guys be upgrading your Inside Llywen Davis Blu-ray to the Criterion? One of my favorite movies but the current release is very good. Wondering if I should sell it to my friend, skip the Criterion for a while, or just own both.

It depends on how you view special features. The Criterion edition has a very generous serving of extras, not usually seen for Coen bros films since they're rather reticent towards that kind of stuff. If that's important to you, then you may want to go for the Criterion release.
Quote:
  • New audio commentary featuring writers Robert Christgau, David Hajdu, and Sean Wilentz
  • The First Hundred Feet, the Last Hundred Feet, a new conversation between filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and directors Joel and Ethan Coen about the evolution of their approach, from Blood Simple to Inside Llewyn Davis
  • Inside "Inside Llewyn Davis," a forty-five-minute 2013 documentary
  • Another Place, Another Time (2014), a 101-minute film documenting an Inside Llewyn Davis tribute concert, featuring Joan Baez, Mumford & Sons, Punch Brothers, Gillian Welch, Jack White, and others
  • New piece on the history of "Fare Thee Well (Dink's Song)," featuring music producer T Bone Burnett and the Coens
  • New piece about Dave Van Ronk and the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early sixties, featuring music writer and historian Elijah Wald
  • Sunday, a short 1961 documentary by Dan Drasin about the riots that took place in Washington Square Park after folk musicians were prevented from gathering and playing there

I've been buying from the B&N site for years during the sales. I've always found that it's really the only reasonable way to purchase Criterion blu-rays. Places like HMV and Best Buy have very prices and never go on sale for Criterion. It isn't as good of a deal now that the dollar is so low, but still worth it.

I will update. I don't usually double dip, but I'll make an exception for this and Moonrise Kingdom. And Boyhood, when it comes out.

A rare and beautiful talent. And no, they're not making them like her any more. RIP.
Her notes about John Candy were especially interesting.

I watched The Brood last night. I'm in the midst of a 31 nights of horror run and this is thus far the most disturbing movie I've watched. I saw it as a teenager, and found it lacking, but boy was I wrong. The transfer is fantastic too.

On a different note, I don't know how many of you follow him on Twitter, but last night Guillermo del Toro responded to incorrect assumptions about the special effects in Crimson Peak. He says that all bar one of the ghosts in the movie were man-in-suit effects, ala The Devil's Backbone. Thought it worth mentioning in this as I've seen the same complaint thrown around in here.

Has there been any news about the 'special edition' of BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR? Not sure how much longer I want to wait before settling for the Artificial Eye version.

Watched The Thin Blue Line for the first time last night on blu-ray. I have to say, probably my favorite documentary ever and one of my favorite blu-rays. Fascinating. Although, I do think that they could've done a lot more with the supplements.

I am, without a doubt, upgrading my Blu-ray.

The website still shows it coming at some point, but I thought I recall Criterion saying recently that it isn't coming in the immediate future.

Just wanted to post my thoughts on Carroll Ballard's short films I've been watching the last few nights. Last night I spent another hour and watched his 2 shorts from the 1970s (one on crystal formation and the other on centenarians and their memories of Los Angeles). I absolutely loved the final few minutes of the latter film, entitled Seems Like Only Yesterday, which is mostly a documentary, and it reminded me a lot of Koyaanisqatsi, in how the editing was done. Has anyone else seen his shorts? They are accessible from the supplements section of The Black Stallion.

Default Videodrome supplements

I was watching some of the supplements for Videodrome, and I really enjoyed the Fear On Film panel discussion. It featured Jon Landis, John Carpenter and Cronenberg. It was an interesting conversation, and Cronenberg really shined in particular.

Anyway, I don't know if I read too much into this, but for those who have seen this, did it seem like Carpenter and Landis had some sort of beef? It felt like there were some awkward moments between the two. I wanted to see if anyone else noticed this, or if it was just a combination of Carpenter being generally prickly and Landis awkwardly feeding off of said prickliness.

"Carpenter being generally prickly."

I don't know if I've ever seen an interview with John Carpenter where he didn't come off as somewhat of a prick.

...he lacks even the most rudimentary sense of what you and I would call the social niceties.

Hmmm so I guess it is not ok to have a small gaming tangent, which is weird since I've seen music tangents that last almost a full page.

Anyway just finished watching Blind Chance supplements and while they are not much in length they are still interesting, and help understand the context of Poland at the time the film takes place, also help me catch that
[Show spoiler]the last story was actually the real one, as I didn't make the connection of the last scene of the plane with the beginning shot of the movie, somehow I forgot.

Also forgot to mention last time but a movie it reminded me that I would recommend if you enjoyed this is Mr. Nobody, it even has a train sequence very reminiscent of this movie.

Dumb question...can Criterion release movies that are a part of Sony Pictures Classics? I just saw a commercial for Secret in their Eyes (2015) and was wondering the chances of the 2010 Argentinian gets a Criterion release...thanks, all!

I'll definitely be upgrading. One of the films I watched this weekend was A Most Violent Year, and Oscar Isaac's performance truly impressed me. I'm planning on giving away the unopened, supplement-free copy of Inside Llewyn Davis that's been sitting on the top of my "watch pile"; I think it would make a great stocking stuffer for one of my family members this Christmas.

According to a recent Film Comment magazine, Der Verlorene is in the process of restoration, so even if it is not released by Criterion there is a possibility of it coming sometime in the next years. I couldn't find anything about it doing a Google search though.
