I am very excited for this. I am upset that I missed it at NYFF, as it doesn't even have a US release date yet!

My annual horror film viewing is in full swing and started the weekend off with Kwaiden. The sets and colors look wonderful and the slow pace and haunting traditional score is both offsetting and relaxing.

Followed it up with WaC The Hunger. Much better then I anticipated. Mostly silent film with a lot of classical music, lovely actors and a interesting story. Did not find it 'artsy' as many of the reviews stated. A lot of fast jump cuts, but the lighting, mood and somberness of the film works well IMO.

Then watched another favorite of mine which I would love to see a restoration and Bluray release from anybody. Freaks.

Then it was on to genre favorites Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula and The WolfMan.

Will be watching a ton more throughout the week. Definitely the highly underrated The Phantom Carriage. Also in the queue Frankenstein and Young Frankenstein. Which are must watches for me every year. Wish more silents came with Alt creepy soundtracks like Phantom.

Any other suggestions?

I really enjoyed it and I think you will, too. As I mentioned earlier, Oscar Isaac is brilliant, and there's also a fantastic performance from the talented and sexy Jessica Chastain, who is quickly becoming one of those actresses I'll watch in anything. The film perfectly captures time and place (New York City in 1981); I could easily see it receiving the Criterion treatment somewhere down the road.

Last night, I saw a big screen showing of Dracula (1931) and its Spanish counterpart at a theater down the street. The experience of seeing Bela Lugosi in his iconic role in a theater setting was really something else!

Nice! I was also unable to make it, but a local theatre is showing Hou Hsiao-Hsien's The Assassin tonight which should help take away the sting of missing it.

Speaking of HHH, Criterion was awfully chatty about him this weekend. Hopefully that means A Brighter Summer Day or even a HHH film will get the Criterion treatment sooner rather than later.

That would make sense, I think it's with IFC.

I didn't get to watch as much as I wanted this weekend. Carving jack-o-lanterns used to be easy. Now with the stencil kits it takes way too much time and for me it is x4 with a houseful of kids.

I watched the first two stories from Kwaidan yesterday. First time viewing. Visually stunning and eerie, but I wasn't quite in the mood for slow paced horror. I plan on finishing this week. I ended up watching Monster House with the kids. My 22 month old son absolutely freaked out on one scary scene which was both very sad and funny at the same time.

I also saw The Vanishing for the first time last night. SOOOO much better than the remake I watched in the theater years ago. I thought it was fantastic and was shocked that George Sluizer directed both versions. How was the american version so terrible?

I also watched Godard's The Weekend...this weekend since CriterionBlues covered it for his Criterion Close-up "Short cut" podcast. I appreciate the tracking shot and some of the humor, but it is definitely at the bottom of my Godard list. A little to experimental and artsy for my taste. I didn't consider it terrible, but I can't say that I completely enjoyed it.

Kwaiden is an extremely slow picture. You really have to be in the mood for it and allow yourself to escape into the music and it's pacing. The 3rd segment is the best and the 4th is nice as well , but rather short. I would never place Kwaiden as my favorite Japanese horror film, but its a fine film and quite unlike others of its era. The closest film I think it looks like is Ballad of Narayama (1958). Both use exaggerated painted backdrops and treat the film almost like a theater production. Though Ballad has some rather unique scene changes where backdrops will roll up and set pieces move past the frame into the foreground transitioning into new scenes. Very well done and interesting film. It also has a nice soundtrack of traditional Japanese instruments and songs though no real horror elements other then the folk tale itself is morbid.

Speaking of IFC, has anyone seen the trailer for Queen of Earth?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3993894/?ref_=nv_sr_1

The guy doing the narration sounds like Frank Caliendo's impersonation of the movie trailer guy.

Finally got round to watching House this weekend - I don't usually watch horror nor do I do any horror schedules in October, but maybe I'll make a change and watch Kuroneko this Halloween (which seems an apt follow on, given the cat angle).

Anyhow, I thoroughly enjoyed Hausu - the pacing, energy and colours were fantastic and the way it teetered between being funny and horrific at the same time was quite unique (to this horror novice at least). The 49 minute feature on the disk was very interesting too. And it has a booklet

I didn't get the trailer, really. I did see the film though and thought it was fantastic.

Really excited to see that one, Elizabeth Moss has been great on the few movies I've seen with her.

Specially in Listen Up Philip by the same director.

Kwaidan is indeed slow-paced horror and visually stunning, but the third tale "Hoichi the Earless" is the real treat. Although it's definitely far from the norm. I'll never forget when I first saw it, totally engrossed, while my wife was yelling expletives at the screen. Not for everyone.

Speaking of which, yeah, Godard is divisive. I appreciate the listen and watch. As I alluded to, there are some Godard films that people love and I hate, while this one has proven to be the opposite with you and I. That's just the thing with Godard. I don't like to use the word "pretentious," but I get it when someone attributes the word to Godard's work. I am curious, have you seen and do you like Pierrot le fou? It isn't quite as out there as Weekend and is more upbeat and cheerful, but it is also experimental in some similar ways.
