Not a fan of the "horror" genre but this is a truly terrifying film that builds subtly and ominously to its fabled climax. Edward Woodward's performance is incredible, which segues nicely with Criterion as Breaker Morant is an essential buy for me in the November B&N sale.

You were right on Pierrot le fou. I only got in the first half of the film after getting kids to bed last night, but it is on pace to top my Godard list.
Unlike Weekend, the style of the film was not off-putting at all. It was fun and I could follow his intent and mood. In Weekend, I just felt he moved beyond my understanding or even whether or not I cared to understand.

I also really enjoy Godard's dialogue with PLF much like Breathless and Band of Outsiders. I look forward to finishing the film at lunch break today.

Have watched pretty much all of those except the few I do not own. Always watch a lot of Hammer films, all the Universal 30's films. Still have yet to watch NightMare Castle

Onibaba
Kuroneka
Phantom Carriage
Nosferatu
The Omen
Exorcist
The Innocents
The Uninvited
Dr Caligari
Young Frankenstein
Psycho
Diabolique
The Shining
The Haunting
Legend of Hell House
The Entity
Evil Dead
Let The Right One in (not the horrible remake)
Pan's Labyrinth .

This year I've watched a lot of the Vincent Price movies. I pretty much enjoy any movie with Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing, Karloff or Lugosi. All actors that no matter how low budget, how bad the screenplay or the actors around them almost always gave 120%.

Burnt Offerings was a treat to see after so many years and looked fine on Bluray. Like I mentioned earlier The Hunger was a treat as well and comes recommended. I think it holds up very well and is still unique. Wolfen also had its moments, but I did not enjoy it as much. I think Blancanieves fits into halloween viewing as well and it really is a must see IMO. Dead of Night needs a RegionA release, but will become a annual halloween staple for me. Ballad of Tam Lin was much better then I anticipated though I found the folk music kind of grating. Shame this wasn't a Criterion release so we could get some extra's about the making of the film.

Will probably even watch a few Jean Rollin films ( very atmospheric though lacking in plot, competent acting).

My Halloween holy grails would be a Bluray release of Tod Browning's Freaks and of course Whale's Old Dark House. Not to mention some Conrad Veidt films like Hands of Orlac ( or even the Peter Lorre remake), The Man Who Laughs or maybe even Waxworks. Sadly I feel we won't be seeing these films in HD for a long time.

Would love to see The Changeling get a Bluray release as well.

I took one for the team and ordered a used DVD of The Changeling for a couple of dollars from Amazon earlier this month, because I've been wanting to see it again, and I was tired of waiting. It's one of the greatest horror films ever made, in my opinion, and I'd also love to see it in a better video presentation.

Darn I was hoping your response would be "You didn't know it was out on Bluray!"..

Agree about your assessment of the film. That period between 70-80 had some of the best horror films ever made and it stands above most IMO.

I’m envious of the time you guys have to watch so many movies…

I’d probably watch next to nothing from the horror genre being that it is my least favorite, but my wife likes it so we’ve tried to watch a few.

Nosferatu The Vampire (Herzog) – blind bought the BFI release… watched the German version and wasn’t disappointed.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night – it had its moments. was maybe too ‘cool’ for its own good, but overall I liked it. heavy Jim Jarmusch vibe going on.

We also watched Antichrist, or factually speaking, we watched the first 50 minutes or so of Antichrist before giving up on it. I can only guess that the vile part was yet to come. We had no desire to stick around for it given the labored artsy vibe of the first half of the film.

We also tried Scream. My review of the first 8 minutes is as follows: Craven knew that his movie was stupid, so kudos to him for that. That doesn’t take away from the fact that the film is…

wait for it…

stupid.

Not going to subject myself to that kind of trash. I know a lot of people like that, so party on.

No wonder its not your favorite genre watching Scream and Antichrist.

It is by far my favorite genre though I like atmospheric. otherwordly. ghostly films and have never really been a fan of slasher films or over the top gory films. I prefer something like The Innocents or Onibaba. The Haunting is another one that's more concerned with atmosphere and can be down right spooky at times.

I can stand blood in films as I absolutely love Pans Labyrinth, but for the most part am not that big a fan of over the top kills throughout a movie or fake 'who done it' slasher films like Scream. Now I do like so bad its good horror films on occasion.

My top five Godard is constantly shifting. Right now tho -

1. Histoire(s) du cinema
2. Pierrot le fou
3. Slow Motion/Every Man For Himself
4. Passion
5. Adieu au langage 3D

I'm pretty much in awe of everything he's ever made tho, and even have time for the 70s stuff.

Trick or treat? A treat for sure—a classic horror movie, made during the last 40 years, that we have never screened at the Cinematheque and which will be shown in a rare 35mm archive print. We can’t divulge the title, but there’s now a good reason (aside from Halloween) to present this film, which was popular enough in its day to be followed by a sequel and later remade.

No one under 18 admitted! Approx. 90 min.
Any guesses? I think it's Halloween.

So my mailman will be arriving in about 1:45 minutes. But who's counting?

Today will be my blue key day. Diving back into Mulholland Drive all week for the first time in 10 years (seen it about half a dozen times though). I'm curious how my perspective will change after a little bit of aging.

Edit: he arrived early. SILENCIO!! https://twitter.com/awest505/status/659060038322012160

I honestly don't know.. I asked the question because it sounds like a generic title. I figured there were maybe a half dozen movies with that name. Haven't really heard of any of them. Like I mentioned, horror films aren't really on my radar, but if someone says "atmospheric," then we might be on to something.

I've sought out movies like Drag Me To Hell and Babadook because they had really positive reviews. Even when I don't like something, I can at very least understand what someone else might like about it. DMTH had me absolutely befuddled. Absolute garbage. But like BannedUser mentioned, I'm probably looking in the wrong places.

Of course, The Haunting (1963) is the one to see. It's an amazing horror film across the board, and it's a fine adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel, The Haunting of Hill House.

The Haunting (1999) is godawful, despite the decent cast.

Of course, it's easy to confuse the titles with House on Haunted Hill (which was also remade with bad results).

There are about a million movies out there with the word, "haunting", in the title, just as there are a million movies with "The Exorcism of..." in the title.
