So, I got an email from B&N three days ago, which said that my order was scheduled to ship. That was pretty fast, so obviously I was happy (it would still take 7 to 21 days to arrive, but that's beside the point). Only, I just got another email from them, saying that the Red Shoes BD was removed from my order because they couldn't deliver it. Seems odd, since it was released not a very long time ago, and I assume that they stock up on titles just before a sale. Anyway, I'm pretty bummed, since this was a title I was looking forward to very much, and I assumed that the order had already been shipped. Have to buy it somewhere else, I suppose.

I've tried to rent it, but it's been in a "very long wait" status on NetFlix for a while.

What do the rest of you think?

Thanks!
It's definitely worth it...actually all his films out on Criterion are worth picking up. They are all solid releases.

Just a tip for anyone who lives in Austin TX, The Man who Fell to Earth blu-ray is available (as far as I've seen, unless I got the lasy) at the Barnes & Noble Arboretum store, so be diligent about getting your copy if you don't already own this awesome film.

Are there any of the first wave of digipak CC blu-rays worth getting? I'm trying to make sure that fir my next order of replacement cases I don't ever need to order any more of them. So far, here's what I've got.

The Third Man (replaced)
The Last Emperor (replaced)
Last Year at Marienbad (replaced)
The 400 Blows (replaced)
Bottle Rocket
The Man Who Fell to Earth

El Norte? Chungking Express? The Last Metro? I think those are the only ones left. Also wondering if In the Realm of Senses is worth a purchase? I love Japanese cinema and I loved the other Oshima film, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, so would it follow that I would at least enjoy his most provocative film? I hated Antichrist, if that helps at all (though In the Realm of Senses looks much more interesting IMO)

Even if I were to call this "porn" (which I certainly wouldn't) It wouldn't be considered "soft porn" since the sex scenes were not simulated.....

I don't consider this a "porn" at all..... and I'd defend it any-day-of-the-week on those grounds.... it's certainly not one of my favorite films though, and I would never call it an artistic masterpiece. The themes in it are pretty heavy, if you look past the graphic nature of it.

Harry Potter isn't a fad. It's been topping the charts of book sales and movie sales for the past 13 years. Would you call Star Wars a fad? I'd say it's on the same level.

There are far worse tattoos to have once your older. Plus, Harry Potter is enjoyed by many many adults as well as children. There are huge debates on whether the Harry Potter series should even be considered children's books.

Oh gosh no. I read each of the books once, have seen each of the movies once. Wouldn't necessarily say I like the Twilight series, I just don't have anything bad to say about it. I got through them, and they were tolerable.

I'd hate to know what you guys would say about my straight edge tattoo...

My "Red Shoes" order was on delay, but I canceled it last night. Fortunately my local B&N got in four copies of the blu-ray yesterday, and I got one of them this morning.

On a separate note, has anyone noticed that Criterion has begun rereleasing some of their older two-disc DVD sets in their new packaging format? I saw "The Rules of the Game" was in a slim DVD case with the current Criterion logo when I was browsing through B&N's DVD section.

For a second I was tempted to buy it for the slimmer packaging (I'm running out of room on my Criterion display case), but decided not to as it contained the same exact DVDs in the inside. Also, I'm guessing it will eventually be released on blu-ray by Criterion.

Sorry that I don't know my Harry Potter history and the fact that the movies are just money machines (milking the last story into 2 movies, nice way to respect the fans). And Star Wars should of been a fad. It is a 70's Sci-Fi film that got lucky out of the many sci-fi films of that time and now Lucas is milking it for as much money as he can. I can name far better sci-fi films of the 70's. You can say Star Wars is good and millions will agree. Well millions would also say Jonas Brothers is good, so....

I think Harry Potter will still be very big decades from now. I don't know if there will be nerd conventions to celebrate it in the distant future but I don't doubt it will still be a big part of popular culture. I enjoyed the Potter film series but never fully understood the massive popularity the franchise has.

Star Wars is far better than simply "good" IMO. It's a great series. The original one not the prequels that is. Quite possibly my favorite movie trilogy of all-time.

Take all of the Star Wars video games, comic books, t-shirts, coffee mugs, toys, sex toys, whatever that Lucas pimped out, take all of that aside and focus on the films. Star Wars just haven't lived up to what it was as a kid watching it. It's not the big, huge PERFECT thing people makes it out to be. It has bad acting and it is dated just like all the other 70's Sci-fi films.

Edit:

It's hard to make future films and look back. It had 70's hair and clothes.

There is slimmer case version of Robert Altman's Short Cuts as well, cost 10 bones less.

I always thought the acting was quite good in the original trilogy.
The prequels acting certainly sucked for the most part. I really don't care about all the nonsense Lucas put out there regarding the series.

It's kinda like the original Rocky movie. I still love the original Rocky and pretty much ignore the endless stream of pathetic sequels that came afterwards. Ditto on the original Jaws and other horror franchises. Rarely do the endless sequels come close to the original.

The original Star Wars trilogy wasn't perfect but it came pretty close to perfect for me.

I like the original Star Wars series...... but in regards to your comment here... Would you say "Dune" breaks that trend???? I realize it came out in the 80's, but it would appear that the hair styles weren't "generational" and given the fact that they all wore 'suits' for the most part, I don't think the dress gives it away either.....

I'm also a fan of "Dune" just throwing it out there...... for the most part, I wouldn't consider myself a big fan of Sci-Fi as a genre......

Except for Sting and Kyle MacLachlan, you can't make it more 80's then that for hair

Every Potter film from Goblet of Fire on has had major cuts from the books, wasn't going to be easy to do that with the last one as the majority of the Hallows portion of the story is exclusive to that book. IMHO, that's one of the reasons those films haven't been very good, cramming in plot points destroyed a lot of the character development present in the novels. I'd have preferred an anime adaptation that didn't cut so much.

You can say it does. My pet peeve is mostly 70's Sci-fi films. 80's films did a much better job (Blade Runner, Dune, etc). Just like Star Wars for example, there was no real effort in making it look like the future. Like if you think right now about creating a future, you would think the hair styles and clothes would be much different than what we have today. Well Lucas should of thought the same in the late 70's. Just my opinion. Maybe Star Wars should of had a touch of David Bowie or something.
