A waste of a release if true. Arrow's fine.

That's what I was wondering, but knowing Ryan, it has to be legit for him to tweet something out.

And yes, I would love to see Seven Days in May on Criterion. The Train is also a possibility when the Twilight Time rights expire.

I will never understand this argument when it's brought up.

The Criterion Collection is a North American based company, while Arrow is a United Kingdom one.

The fact that some people buy Region Free Blu-ray players and choose to import films shouldn't have any influence on which films a studio releases on Blu-ray in their domestic market.

"The Criterion Collection's releasing Barton Fink on Blu-ray?! But it already has such a great Blu-ray release in Kenya!"

I doubt it will look anything better than Arrow, which is only a bit better than MGM.

Which means they probably will have tons of extras.

Thats a bummer. I only ordered one Zatoichi. They sent me a shipping notification with a tracking number but it hasn't actually shipped bc of Veterans Day. Says just standard usps. Ill let you know tmr if the tracking updates.

It's already been released in NA. I see no reason for Criterion to bother using its limited resources on it. Arrow should just release their version over here if it's so important.

I'll cite the Inside Llewyn Davis example. Many, including me, thought it strange to upgrade a decent release. And then I saw the feature and was all in.

I'll reserve judgement until I see what they are doing with it. Criterion could tell a good story that the other labels haven't.

Best news ever. Angela Lansbury is AMAZING!

Some people would rather see Criterion devote their energies to releasing films that don't already have perfectly good releases.

That seems pretty easy to understand.

I'm not the biggest fan of some of Criterion's choices, but I'll say that almost all of their products are quality releases with a bevy of extras.

Inside Llewyn Davis, while a very good transfer, had what, one extra? A large film like ILD with an interesting production and dealing with an interesting period in music history, has plenty more to offer than a making of featurette.

The same goes for all of these MGM films. Most of their releases are barebones in extras and have a poor transfer with absolutely nothing going for them.

Do you think the current MGM release is good or do you think there's plenty of room for improvement like The Graduate (another confirmed release)?

I think the current MGM release is a bit better than good. PQ/AQ are both very solid and there's a pretty decent set of supplements.

There's always room for improvement but if you gave me a choice between an improved The Manchurian Candidate and some other film that has yet to get a BD release anywhere I would almost certainly go with the film that hasn't been released yet.

And that's completely understandable. However, that is not what I was trying to say earlier.

A lot of people in this thread, and I'm not trying to call out StLouisRibs, say that x film is a wasted Blu-ray release because there is a proper release of it in another country. However, that other country is not the United States so if The Criterion Collection chooses to give x film a proper release, it seems perfectly reasonable.

Ordering a film from the other side of the world involves at most a couple more mouse clicks and region-locking is really no more than a mild inconvenience. From a consumer standpoint the practical differences between an Arrow.uk release and an Arrow.us release or an MGM release are negligible.

I don't really see a lot of difference between Criterion duplicating a release locked to region-B ad duplicating any other release. Some differences, yes. But not too many and they're really not that significant.

I believe he does exist. I had a dream that he lived behind a dumpster in the alley behind Winkie's.

I had a dream where he was this weird, little midget in a suit, operating out of a glass-enclosed underground office, where he secretly directs the entire Criterion operation.

But I don't think it means anything.

...I was on mushrooms that night.

The way I see it, statements like the one of StLouisRibs are just personal opinions and I don't feel offended by them, if I had the Arrow release I would probably think the same, doesn't mean I would post about it, but maybe an added "Happy for those without free region player" could help.

The same happens reversed if you check the MoC or Arrow threads, because many people on UK collect Criterions.
