Hate the timing. All of the Criterion I want come out the 2nd half of November...
Actually, I was handed a bunch of 20% off coupons by a store employee this past week, and was told to come back in this coming Monday. "But they expire on Sunday," I pointed out. The response? "Not in my department, they don't."

And don't forget ... there are printable coupons good for $5 off any $50 purchase and $8 off any DVD or blu-ray priced $40 or more that don't expire until December 27!

Well, still half movie to see but it feels like a chore..
Also the whole setting and shots seem too claustrophobic to me..
The movie kinda moves along with what seems like a very non-descript (even generic) plot until all of Ozu's subtleties and all of his characters' gracefulness adds up and blind sides you by the film's end. I liked it while it was unfolding. By the last ten minutes or so, I was sure I loved it.

I wish I had never read about it before watching it, but after a few minutes I really stop noticing anything wrong, sure that means it has room for improvement and coming from Criterion it is bit of a bummer, but I wouldn't double dip or anything just because of that.

Also it helps that as far as I remember there is no corrected blu-ray version, or at least not in any english friendly version.

I have SEVEN DAYS IN MAY on dvd. It is my favorite political thriller with a great script by Rod Serling. The dvd has commentary by John Frankenheimer. If it's released on Blu-ray, I hope they have additional commentary---which is hard to do since most of the cast is deceased.

After the horrific events in Paris today, I'm planning on a rewatch of Battle of Algiers tomorrow.

Anyone who hasn't seen it should take this opportunity to pick it up and fix that.

I have the Criterion DVD and yeah, that's one powerful movie. You need a lot of emotional energy if you're going to dive in. But I agree: everyone should see it.

My prayers go out to all the people of Paris and France. Is there anyone here who posts in this thread who lives in Paris?

I was in Paris in 1988 but I was only 9 years old. I don't remember much, but I do remember, as a young boy, being admitted into a women's restroom high up on the Eiffel tower because I had to pee really, really, really bad. Thank you, kind women of Paris.

Battle of Algiers would be good to watch now...or any French new wave film actually, especially The 400 Blows.

More recently, La Haine / Hate is a great choice too. It is about three young friends and their struggle to live in the banlieues of Paris. The title derives from a line spoken by one of them, Hubert: "La haine attire la haine !", "hatred breeds hatred." Its really intense, really violent but also deals with the lack of justice, which France seems to be experiencing now.

Yeah, I've been meaning to watch La Haine for some time now, and I just haven't gotten around to it. Now would be an appropriate time, probably. OTOH, I just went back into the archives on my computer and started to look at some of the pictures from my two trips to Paris. But they just depressed me and I stopped. So I'm not sure.

I'm officially on Team Bring Le Samurai to Criterion Blu-ray.
Not sure I've seen a more styleful film. I would have liked a little more substance in the story, but this is one I'll revisit multiple times in the future.

Also watched 8 1/2 for the first time last night. My first Fellini film and maybe I'm too vanilla, but it didn't do much for me. I appreciate the mindset created and several iconic scenes. My wife kept asking why I was watching it and I kept telling her because it's one of the greatest films ever made. However, that doesn't mean it is one of my favorites.

Army of Shadows would be a good one to watch also.

I watched The Devil's Backbone last night and was disappointed.

It's not a bad movie, but it's not scary at all and I thought the ghost character was underwhelming.

Almost every aspect of the plot felt somewhat predictable.

I thought the photography was cool and the film looked good.

...but ultimately a disappointing blind buy.

Hopefully Yi Yi will deliver tonight.

I'm normally not a huge fan of family melodramas.

The Devil's Backbone is the one I almost tell you that you could drop from your list to keep it at five some time ago, but didn't because I don't know enough of your taste, I do think is fine but nothing out of the ordinary except visually maybe.

I wouldn't say Yi Yi is just a family melodrama, from what I remember you are a big fan of Three Colors Red right? I have a feeling you will really like Yi Yi, let us know your thoughts after you see it.

I haven't been impressed with a Del Toro film yet, and The Devil's Backbone certainly didn't change my mind.

You criticise nearly every horror film as being "not scary." How about just anticipating a new film that you see to simply be "a good film" regardless of genre classification?

I'm sorry to say it, but my prediction for your experience with Yi Yi will have you reporting "it was just ok."

Should have went w/ Revanche.. Not that I think it's better than Yi Yi, but I pay close attention to ppl and their tastes. I think you'll prefer it.

I didn't think it was that good of a film--regardless of genre.

Well there you go. I didn't either.

Have you seen On The Waterfront? That's I film that I'm fairly sure you'd enjoy.
