Nice to see one of last year's new year's clues coming out this January. Which others have come out this year? Was the majority correct or any surprises from the artwork?

Ali Fear Eats the Soul > Petra von Kant IMHO.

Ali is much more emotionally engaging (and devastating).

I agree that Ali is more engaging, but Petra von Kant is visually superior. The cinematography, production design, costumes, even the actors in the frame are just gorgeous.

You're a fan of Petra Von Kant I take it?

Try to convince to blind buy this.

...like your life depends on it.

I thought you got mad when people convinced you to buy blu rays?

...you send very mixed messages.

I must be one of the only people who didnt care for Ali.
I thought the ending was really stupid and forced and that Ali was terribly wooden. On top of all things I wasn't so convinced about the starting of their relationship.
I did really like a lot of things with it too though, as stated the cinematography was terrific and there was some good social commentary going on there as well.
My favorite Fassbinder so far has been The Marriage Of Maria Braun, hopefully get to see the BRD make an appearance at some point in time.

If at all possible, get Hulu. It will become your bestest buddy!

I think it's stylistically brilliant. But we have different tastes. I don't like World on a Wire, but you do.

That defeats the totally illogical, irrational purpose of the blind buy.

...but I get what you're saying.

I thought All That Heaven Allows was pretty good.

But I didn't enjoy Imitation of Life.

...based on my fascination with World on a Wire, I think I'd prefer the Fassbinder that's a little darker and a little edgier.

Think of it like blind buying your Hulu subscription

Also even with the regular subscription, there are no ads in all the Criterion catalog, the only downside is many of the SD versions look quite bad on a big enough screen, but a lot of the titles are in HD anyway, they don't seem to be adding that many new films as of recently, but there is already a lot there, so I can't complain.

It's saved me from several blind buys on films I was sure I would love.

Petra Von Kant is undeniably beautiful to look at, but it's not that easy to connect with.

Ali on the other hand has one of the most purest depictions of love in cinema, IMHO anyway.

See, I think that they are so different that they are difficult to compare. What they have in common is the director. That's pretty much it.

IMO, they are both excellent films, but each in its own way.

Usually I'm not good at following up with the What's Happening on Hulu posts (I'll read them, think "oh that looks good!", but never do anything about it) but ended up watching Forget Me Not (as mentioned from Friday's post featuring Korda rarities) and really liked it; had a bit of a Brief Encounter vibe and overall very enjoyable (and surprisingly moving). Wrote a thing here if anyone's interested -- https://popculturepundit.wordpress.c...t-me-not-1936/.
