I watched La Notte this weekend for the first time. Amazing film, though not recommended for the ADD crowd. Leisurely paced and oh so good, great cinematography capturing a juxtaposition of the old and modern Milan, a beautiful jazz score worked into the second half of the film, and terrific acting and dialogue from the leads Marcello Mastroianni, Jean Moreau, and Monica Vitti. I can see how this film was ground breaking in its time and, after viewing L'Avventura last week (another exceptional film), has now cemented Antonioni as one of my favorite directors. An intelligent, honest look at a married couple in crisis, La Notte sticks with you afterward and is one of those luxuriously textured films that makes me glad to be a fan of classic cinema.

La Notte is my favorite Antonioni. I had no idea what I was getting into when I first saw L'Avventurra and as a result I didn't appreciate it as much as I probably should. Similarly L'Eclisse didn't quite manage to captivate me in the same way as La Notte did. Red Desert I never got into for some reason. I'm not saying these are bad movies, far from it, they're just not quite up there with La Notte, in my opinion.

It's all about perspective. In the $19.99 situation I end up either owning a film, or selling it to recoup my funds. In the $7.99 situation I don't end up owning anything and have no way to recoup what I spent, and if I see a film I like and want to own I have to spend an additional $19.99 to own it.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of great reasons to use streaming services, especially Hulu if you're a Criterion fan, it's just not for me.

As for the release announcement, I'm pulling for Mikio Naruse (like pretty much every month).

I personally just search names, but I think you can set up alerts when a website changes or get updated... not sure

They have been licensing from WB for a few titles. Day for Night being the most recent. So times have changed.

Yeah but didn't they give BFI a real hard time with that release, they wouldn't even allow Bluray? (I'm not 100% sure on all the details tbh)

Wel that BFI was from March of 2012, I think maybe the UK branch of WB thought if they released it only on DVD then the masses wouldn't notice the release just the film crowd who have been wanting to own the title. Possibly thinking a blu release would have given them hate mail or something. Who knows. but I think people have gotten over it. Just my thinking on the BFI release.

I have my Chrome browser set to notify me of changes to the Criterion new release page so I don't have to refresh constantly. However, seems like there are infinite possibilities for phantom pages.

I thought you guys must live within the Matrix code to sense changes. Or, perhaps your spouse's maiden name is Mulvaney and you have an inside scoop.

I forgot today was announcement day. I'm guessing Paris nous appartient will be one of the releases. Maybe Only Angels Have Wings, but I am thinking that will be a March title. I hoping for a Almodóvar title.
