Well, I think I'm done with purchases for the current Criterion sale. Everything else will have to wait.
My total haul (in spoiler form, so you only have to look if you want to. ![]() [Show spoiler] Needless to say, I have plenty to watch over the next few months. ![]() |

To anyone who has watched the Black Narcissus disc, in the review on this site, the reviewer mentions "minor" and "occasional" color pulsations. And all I'm wondering is if I got a possible bad disc. Because my display is professionally calibrated, none of my other recently purchased discs have given me problems, but the colors on my copy of Black Narcissus constantly pulsate and fluctuate, as in the colors are not stable from one frame of animation to the next. The actor's faces are in a consistent state of change, from looking just right, to too flushed, to an almost sickly yellow or green.
Normally, I'm not one to ever be overly judgmental and surely do not consider myself an image snob, but it's so distracting I can't even enjoy the movie. It's almost like a strobe light effect of colors. ![]() EDIT: Tried it in both my Sony SA player and my PS3, and it's the same issue. I become nauseated by strobe lights, and this is having the same effect on me. ![]() Last edited by QuasidodoJr; 07-26-2010 at 05:28 AM. |

![]() Thanks for mentioning "Empire". I watched a clip the other day and felt it'd be relevant to my interests. I've had it in my B&N cart just waiting to be bought, along with Oshima's eclipse box. I had the Oshima box in there even before watching "Realm". The trailer on Criterion.com had me sold from the get go. Also, glad to see you enjoyed "Salo". Welcome to our tiny club. ![]() Last edited by capnnarcolepsy; 07-26-2010 at 09:14 AM. |

You do not have a defective disc. These "pulsations" are inherited - they are often seen in Technicolor productions. Minor "pulsations" also appear on the restored version of The Red Shoes. Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 07-26-2010 at 08:31 AM. |

When I put on Black Narcissus, it's a constant effect. An endless swirl that runs through too much red, too much green, and then just right, etc., from the start of the movie until the end. And this is in between frames of animation. Like I mentioned, to me it has nearly the same effect as a strobe light, especially since I watch blu-rays in a darkened room. It's also pronounced enough that it actually appears to detract from the detail, as, while the colors are shifting, detail fades in and out. The best way I can describe what I'm seeing, is it looks like someone handed my HDTV's remote over to an ADD riddled 5-year-old, and told them to go crazy with the video options. If this is how it's supposed to look, I can do my best to get through it for a single viewing, but it's not a disc I will be holding onto. No matter how good a movie is, it's not worth feeling sick over. Last edited by QuasidodoJr; 07-26-2010 at 09:09 AM. |

![]() ![]() I'm sure it doesn't affect everyone. But it has a negative impact on my personal sensibilities, with slight nausea as a side effect. Sort of like a disorienting feeling. I've watched over 600 blu-rays, and this is the first time I've ever had the issue come up. And it's certainly not the first Technicolor blu-ray presentation I have viewed. Not sure what to say or how to feel on the matter. I wish I could say it didn't bother me, but it does. |

I think I may finally be finished with the B&N sale. Spent two days trying to decide on a second blu to go with A Christmas Tale and finally ended up ordering Battle of Algiers on DVD. I never intended on collecting all the blu's released by Criterion but I must admit I have enjoyed almost every Criterion I have bought. The lone exception is Last Year at Marienbad (which seems to be a favorite around here.)
The blu's I currently am on the fence about are; Howards End Monsoon Wedding Lola Montes Secret of the Grain. Keeping in mind that 2 movies I enjoyed very much lately are Wild Strawberries and Everlasting Moments, are there any movies on this list that you think I must be crazy to pass up? I'll check back this evening (because I've received some great advice here before ![]() |

Finally got around to watching Seventh Seal , Kagemusha & Repulsion. All great films although Seventh Seal is the best of the 3 IMO. I'm curious how Black Narcissus will look for me. I should get it today. Both it and Red shoes are some of the best looking technicolor movies ever made. Another title you should keep a eye out for is Kino's Pandora and the flying dutchman. Its also from cinematographer Jack Cardiff. Last edited by Banned User; 07-26-2010 at 04:04 PM. |

Here's the "Paths of Glory" blu-ray link on Amazon for those interested.
Don't cry right now, though, 'cause it says DVD out beside the title... that happens a lot. If you go searching there are two listings, though... one for DVD priced at $20.99 and the blu-ray priced @ $27.99. I have provided the blu-ray link. CC Last edited by ccfixx; 07-26-2010 at 04:45 PM. |
