For me, Coming of Age/Life is Hard stories are always a little harder to buy into when the protagonists are privileged white people. I mean, I love Manhattan but it's despite the fact that Woody Allen was having such a tough time writing television shows and sleeping with Mariel Hemmingway after getting divorced from Meryl Streep.

Oh it was great. They did Nanook, Grey Gardens and The Thin Blue Line. Hilarious series!

I've got them ready to watch, just been a tad busy. Good to hear they will be as good as I expect!

I've never thought much of The Graduate. I first saw it in high school, and over the years since then a handful of times where it didn't climb in rank. It's a good flick but that's about where it stops for me. A new Dustin Hoffman interview is welcome though, the one he did for Tootsie was really good. Since they're 're-do'ing some American catalog titles that already have releases - Straw Dogs please!

Yeah, Dustin Hoffman does really good interviews. The tears might have a bit much but the Tootsie stuff is really good and he tells some really cool Lawrence Olivier anecdotes on one of the Marathon Man BD supplements.

I'm the same, actually. I have the Criterion LD of it, and I like it well enough, but I never made a point to get the current Blu-ray of it.

I remember when it was first released. My parents almost never went out to the movies (unless it was a whole family thing), but they went to see The Graduate. When they got home, I asked them how it was. "Definitely for grown-ups," my mother said. That, of course, made me curious about it, but to be honest, I don't think I ever saw it until I got the Criterion LD.

At any rate, of the assumed titles to be announced, I'm mostly interested in the two Troell films, and The Kid.

Without The Graduate we would have never had the wedding scene in Wayne's World 2. Give credit where credit is due.

I don't own any Chaplin titles and have only seen City Lights, so although I'd like to see it one day, The Kid doesn't really excite me much either.
I prefer Modern Times and The Gold Rush to any of his other films from Criterion. I've never seen the Kid so not sure what to expect.

I still get swept up with Manhattan, I love the Gershwin score, Willis' B&W Cinematography and Allen's script. He. I think to this day think's it's overly praised and did not want United Artists to release it initially. In 1979 I did think the Hemingway storyline was creepy, since then....

I do not dislike The Graduate, but it has never spoken to me in the manner like it has others. I was 4 years old when it was released and it was not a film I grasped onto even as a teenager.

Wow, so much indifference for The Graduate, it is a great film in my opinion, it also has a great soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel, and that ending is perfect.

I have the current release, but I gladly upgrade it, it was cheap anyway, there is much room for improvement in the PQ department if this is a new 2K or 4K restoration.

I wouldn't say I'm indifferent to The Graduate but I've never completely connected with it either. It's very good, it's just never hit me as OMG good.

edit: let me rephrase that. I've never felt 'OMG, this is awesome' but that's not really a good measure of whether it's 'OMG good' or not.

It's a film for me also. I like the music more than the film despite the fact that Mrs. Robinson seemed to play non-stop on the radio back when the film came out.

Times have changed and the film is much less shocking today. As I get older I find I sympathize more and more with Anne Bancroft's Mrs Robinson character and less with Dustin Hoffman's break the rules young man

What about the fact that The Graduate has always been meh in terms of extras and a Criterion release will finally bestow upon it the special features a movie of its caliber deserves?

You could turn radios off back then and they would still play it

Very happy to hear Death By Hanging will be getting a blu-ray release! One of Oshima's best.

IMO, they are both excellent films, but each in its own way.
I've been MIA for a few days, so I'm sure I'm a little behind on this:

Welcome back, Aaron. Glad to see they set you free.

I'm so close to goin' to B&N w/ coupons in hand... spending the $80 it would require and walking out of there w/ all 5 titles.
I just watched it last night and loved it. Great reflection on his career.

Only film by him I don't particularly care for is The Circus, but I'll probably like it on a second watch.
