Welcome back, Aaron. Glad to see they set you free.
Thank you.

As to the releases, I'm interested in I Knew Her Well, which I've always wanted to see but somehow never got around to doing so. It sounds like the sort of thing that I would greatly appreciate. Also, The Emigrants.

It would have been nice to see the deleted scenes in context.

Oh, well.
Can you elaborate on the differences? I have seen this like 3 or 4 times, the last one like a year ago on Theaters because they were showing all of Chaplin films from recent restorations.

I think I have always seen the same version.

A very solid month of announcements. I'm in for The Graduate and The Kid. I'll more than likely pick up I Knew Her Well. Not particularly interested in the other two. Naturally, this could all change if a chance for a better release is announced before the Criterion comes along. Don't like "wasting" money or double dipping unnecessarily.

Still, the lack of the original release version will probably keep me from purchasing the Criterion disc. I'll stick with the Image DVD.
Criterion could probably include it if they really wanted to. It's my understanding that movies published in the US prior to 1923 are in the public domain, so it's "just" a matter of how determined they are to find a suitable print and how much they value their relationship with the Chaplin estate. Personally, I find the originals to be of much greater value, since that is what was seen by the public in theaters at the time and not some revisionist 50-years later version. The non--inclusion of the original version seriously dampens my interest in this one.

Is the original in one of the other BLuray releases around the world?

(by the way, the Bluray.com specs should be corrected in the duration)

I'm honestly not sure. I've seen it a few times over the years, and I know I've seen both versions, but I've never done an A/B comparison, so I couldn't tell you for sure which scenes are in which version. I seem to recall that the earlier version has more slapstick, malice and mayhem, and the newer cut tightens the story to focus more on the sentiment aspects. If you're curious, there are streams of both versions on YouTube and elsewhere, just not in 4K HD.

I'll still pick this up, but it's no longer a day 1 buy for me. I'll wait for a sale.

Putting Stefania Sandrelli's face for the cover like that is what I call aggressive marketing. Great month!

Is it sad that before today I had never heard of the film nor any of the cast and crew?

It's so depressing to think all these awesome film Criterion are releasing may be obsolete in future and people will be getting excited about a special edition of the Oldboy, Tale of Two Sisters and Memento remake.

My god...

Its so sad that people are being brought up around film that are just remakes like the above and even Annie and all those other awful attempts. Even those classic Disney films are being remade to live action garbage... Cinderella.. Beauty and the Beast (hey this is sort of Criterion related, awesome film in the collection!)...

Seriously.

STOP.

This doesn't bother me one iota. It isn't like they are desecrating the original films. The remakes will make more money than the original and in five years time, they'll be forgotten like Britney Spears' pop stardom.

Sure you have - Jean-Claude Brialy (the 2 early Chabrol films, A Woman is a Woman, a few Bunuel films, etc.)

Franco Nero was in Bunuel's Tristana.. don't know if you've had a chance to see that one yet.

Ah, you got me there. I guess I don't pay attention to names too often.

Also, I've seen Tristana and think it's a good film. Speaking of Buñuel, I'd be down for a Viridiana release.

Wow, what a strong February slate of releases. This is one of the best months in a long time for big titles and big directors.

The Graduate is an American masterpiece and one of the most influential films of all time. This will be a must-buy addition to my film library.

The Kid is only going to make my Criterion Chaplin collection look even more impressive. I'll buy this one too, happily.

Death by Hanging interests me too, as I own Oshima's other 2 Criterion blu-rays. A possible blind-buy it may be.

The Emigrants/The New Land is a pleasant curiosity. I need to watch these films first.

I Knew Her Well. I don't know much about this title and will research more.
