Really looking forward to having that on blu ray. Such an incredible film.
I wouldn't object to Criterion also releasing The Death of Mr. Lazarescu

Last night, I watched my Criterion Blu-ray of Samuel Fuller's The Naked Kiss.

As much as I enjoyed yesterday afternoon's viewing of Shock Corridor (I posted my thoughts a few pages back.), I think that The Naked Kiss is clearly the superior movie of the two. This movie had me engaged from the go, thanks to an amazing opening sequence that must have been quite edgy for its time, and thanks to a story with emotional heft and a couple of surprising gut punches. Constance Towers commands well-deserved attention for her multi-layered lead performance.

The facade of small-town America has been referenced many times in cinema, but rarely as well as it is in The Naked Kiss. This movie must have tackled 1960s audiences with full force by touching on prostitution, police corruption, abortion, and other issues that I cannot mention here without going too far into spoiler territory. Samuel Fuller's ability to "tell it like it is" is readily evident across the board in this film.

I'm glad that I finally got around to giving Shock Corridor and The Naked Kiss a go, since they were both titles that I grabbed during the last Barnes & Noble Criterion sale. They're both excellent social commentary films that straddle the fence between classic-era film noir and neo-noir.

I don't really feel justified in buying The Apu Trilogy right now, seeing as how I still haven't finished watching my Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman box set, and have not even started watching my David Lean Directs Noël Coward, The Complete Jacques Tati, The Essential Jacques Demy, John Cassavetes: Five Films, or Nikkatsu Noir box sets...let alone my non-Criterion box sets of the Star Trek original series or the Batman original series.

On the other hand, though, this month is the time to buy such a box set, because the price will be low, and because I can still buy a set in good condition before it gets banged up on the shelf at Barnes & Noble.

I should probably wait a week or two to see if Barnes & Noble throws me a few more bones by way of additional coupons that I can use to buy The Apu Trilogy in conjunction with the 50% off sale, but I might just go ahead and buy it this afternoon if I see it at the store while I'm getting In Cold Blood.

There should be another 20% off member coupon this week & 30% off next week. with a 30% off coupon & membership, it will be $31.49 pre-tax...

Apu is on the way. Candidate for blu-ray release of the year.

The voting for this thread's annual poll will open 12/1. I'll post the categories then.

I have many unwatched discs as well, which I plan to get to someday. Having gone through the entire Apu box set and having seen just about all of those that you mentioned, the only one that compares is Tati. I would actually recommend carving out some time to watch both of the sets.

But Apu is really phenomenal. I agree with ShellOilJunior that it could be Blu-Ray of the year.

Nice to see I can already start a list for July sale. The Graduate and Llewyn Davis are both personal favorites.

It's so depressing to think all these awesome film Criterion are releasing may be obsolete in future and people will be getting excited about a special edition of the Oldboy, Tale of Two Sisters and Memento remake.

My god...

Its so sad that people are being brought up around film that are just remakes like the above and even Annie and all those other awful attempts. Even those classic Disney films are being remade to live action garbage... Cinderella.. Beauty and the Beast (hey this is sort of Criterion related, awesome film in the collection!)...

Seriously.

STOP.

Back on topic.

Exciting month - that's a couple big films ticked off
Preach on. I've had similar arguments and rants over and over!

Pretty sure that's just the retrospective poster they sell. Granted, that alone confirms the release. Still, it's nice to see.

EDIT: I see Scott beat me to it.

All in for The Graduate....it's like they know me;
  • The Graduate is my favorite movie of the 1960s
  • A Room with a View is my favorite movie of the 1980s
  • Mulholland Drive is my favorite movie of the 2000s

We just need to round out with the other decaes!

Hadn't heard of I Knew Her Well but it sounds to be up my alley.

I thought about waiting for a better coupon, but $33.63 seemed like a good enough deal for me.

Happy Apu Day all!
