Secret of the Grain

Apu, Don't Look, Friends and Secret are all new to me. I'm already looking forward to spending some time with all of these titles over the holidays.
This one is overlooked too much. Good pick.

I thought it was good - especially the final act. It was a bit difficult, however, to endure watching the family eat in the first half of the film. They must say, "this is good couscous" at least 100 times.

If I ever go to New York or LA I am so totally going to do exactly that.

Assuming anybody asks me where I'm from. Which they probably won't.

Stuck up bastards.

Who do they think they are.

I'm definitely in the minority though. I know it's a title many here have been anxiously awaiting, so I'm glad it's coming. I would like to see more of the director's work though.

Ordered my first B&N films with the 15% off coupon.
Charulata and The Big City, which I havent seen but know will be great. Really been loving Ray's stuff so I figured I'd round off his blu rays during this sale.
Grabbing The Apu Trilogy as well as Day For Night next week after the black friday coupon rolls out.

I bought The Music Room a looooong time ago and it basically sat unopened until last Friday. I was interested enough to buy it but it never quite made it over the last 'what do I feel like tonight' hurdle and once I actually popped it in Friday I almost stopped it a few times.

But I'm very glad I didn't because once it clicked it clicked pretty hard.

The Apu Trilogy was already somewhere on my B&N list but it's definitely moved up.

I am finally on my 3rd and final disc of Les Blank's box set of short documentary films!

I highly enjoyed the "Garlic" movie a few nights ago...and the bluegrass/North Carolina film was also quite cool.

Last night I watched 2 films on disc 3. The films were: In Heaven There Is No Beer? (about Polish culture and polka music!) and Gap-toothed Women (which was incredibly fun!)

Only 3 more movies to go until I AM FINALLY DONE with the Les Blank box set!

I've got so many dang Criterions to get to...can hardly wait.

I really, really don't want to snark or be elitist, or anything like that, but the idea that you might be taking a pass on The Apu Trilogy because you haven't watched your Batman TV series set is...just...well, it's making my brain melt.

Cut him a little slack, he just bought a house. It's understandable that he might a little gun shy about dropping cash on yet another box set when he's already got a stack of unwatched box sets.

Oh and the 60s Batman series is ****ing awesome. So there's that too.

Well, except for those episodes between the beginning and the end.

Sorry, but I think it's ghastly beyond belief.

No need to apologize. You have a melted brain. You're not responsible for the crazy things you might say.

Hopefully I'm not the only one who thinks the artwork for Death By Hanging is just horrible. Looks like they stuck a bunch of clip art images together. Probably the laziest artwork I've seen from Criterion.

Seriously : o?

Lazier than:

:P

I think you have mixed up the term lazy with simplicity you don't know how many proofs they gave in before they came to this final design

Maybe not lazy, then but it certainly is horrible IMO. There's a difference in something looking tasteful while being simple and then something looking just bad and simple.

"It's a Japanese movie about Hanging. Let's find a noose and a rising sun!"

I mean, it's an Oshima film. They couldn't have found some good stills, used the poster art, or even for some real images?

I'm actually Canadian. And I totally understand his pain because a TON of criterion releases don't get distribution in Canada due to copyright bullshit. Prime example of this is any cronenberg movie put out by criterion. we have to import everything.

Well in terms of original poster art, you don't know what the rights of use are with it or ho much it would cost to get the rights, probably might not even be worth the hassle.

I don't really see what you see, I think the imagery works perfectly with the typography, I personally think it looks great and works well, but goes we all like different things :P

The designer is pretty good though check his other work out:

http://www.adammaida.com

He did a few other criterions, maybe Criterion were more strict as this guy is very creative.
