I used to own a cumulative of approximately 4,000 DVDs at one point.

Whether or not it was a true library or not is up for debate, but it's not as great as it seems.

interesting comment.

between DVD and Blu-ray I probably have 300 to 350 movies to choose from when I feel like watching a movie. once you've gone through some of them, you're really only choosing between 1 to 3 titles to watch depending on mood. I'd imagine if you have a lot more, that number really doesn't increase exponentially like one would think it does.

I never invested big into DVD. "Only" about 40 films and I've gotten rid of them all.

Shortly after I bought my Blu-ray player, I sold off about 600 DVDs at a local used store and used the money to upgrade my favorites to Blu-ray. A lot of those DVDs were Criterion titles, so I made some decent money off of them.

The remaining DVDs in my collection are all titles that are not currently available on Blu-ray, mainly classic-era film noir movies.

I've never owned as many movies at once as I do right now, but my purchasing habits during my DVD collecting days were more reckless (blind-buying new movies from the New Release racks at Target or Best Buy on a whim just because I was intrigued, only to be disappointed with them and sell them later on.).

Ha. I know exactly how you feel.

I would go to F.Y.E. every Tuesday and basically purchase every new release whether or not I knew what it was about or whether or not it was regarded as a great film.

Kind of felt the same with LGI, another early scene I thought was great is when they do the Vaudeville performance, not sure why, it's been a while.

I find Renoir is able to make very moving scenes with very little on display, those moments where you can't describe what is it exactly that makes the moment so perfect, the same happens for me in A Day in the Country.

The one I didn't get is The Rules of the Game, but I want to watch that again, I think it was my first movie of him.

so I am now Apu-compliant.

If my spreadsheet is correct, Ray directed 31 feature films. Criterion has now released 10 of them. I had the Late Ray Eclipse set at the register today, but my $8 off $40 wouldn't take because they went by the $22.50 sale price. so, I used the coupon for Apu.

nice thing about picking up a title during the first week is that the copy I picked up is gem mint.

here's hoping that we'll get more Ray in 2016! he has at least a few more titles that are pretty highly regarded.

Default B&N purchase advice?

Hello all its been awhile since I've posted here. (Damn DC govt work bloodsuckers lol)

I'm def buying Mullholland Dr. & 2 days 1 Night.

Any blind purchase advice on:

The Brood (I liked videodrome disliked scanners)

Blind Chance (loved 3 colors)

Also is Dressed to kill worth upgrading from that semi-newer paramount? Bluray...

Thanks as always JM

I've been hearing a lot of lukewarm things about The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant--both publicly and privately.

Anyone here think it's a masterpiece?

Or great or brilliant or classic or other things of that nature?

...where the real Fassbinder junkies at?!

I agree: fix that. Satyajit Ray's the real deal. I first saw the Apu Trilogy in a small art theater on the lower east side of NYC in the mid 60s. It blew me away then, as it has on repeated viewings over the decades. I'm awaiting my copy of the set, and anxious to see it again. Hard to describe why it's such an overwhelming masterpiece. Tremendous cinematography, great acting, and at it's heart: India - the good, the bad, and the ugly. It has always had a very emotional impact on me. I'm sure everyone on this forum who watches it will be amazed. The advanced reviews are not exaggerated. I suspect it will be THE Criterion release of 2015. Check it out, as well as the rest of Ray's stuff. You won't be disappointed.

I love it.

I saw it first in my early twenties and it was one of those great, god they can make movies this way, moments.

What's your name? Ray?

Actually my perception of your taste is that you won't be overwhelmed with his movies. He made simple, dramatic, humane movies with great messages, he did not make pretentious or artful movies that does not go anywhere plot-wise but do a lot of things style-wise (that's what you like, right? ;-) )

But you should try him, start with The Big City...you 'may' (not necessary) need to be open to see/accept a very different culture to like Apu movies.

This is not a warning to anybody else...Just talking to my friend Ray J...
