In honor of Gene Tierney's 95th birthday, I finally opened my cherished blu-ray copy of Night and the City and watched both the American and British cuts. What a wonderful experience, and on so many different levels!

Of course, I've seen the American version many times in the past ... but never looking this gorgeous. Both the picture and sound quality are absolutely splendid; in some ways, it was like seeing the film for the first time. I had forgotten that this was one of Fox's handful of productions in which they eliminated the famous Fox fanfare and instead played the initial bars of the musical soundtrack over the company logo.

That honor was not accorded the British cut of the film, which I saw for the first time tonight. I very much enjoyed it, both for its artistic merits and for the additional footage that was accorded Miss Tierney. Although I probably prefer the American cut overall, Miss Tierney's performance was much better served in the English release, not only because her acting was superior in the alternate takes, but also because her character was better developed and edited. In point of fact, screening the two cuts back-to-back proved to be a fascinating object lesson in the various disciplines and arts that comprise filmmaking as a collaboration involving script, editing, cinematography, direction and scoring.

This has been an incredible year for Criterion, and there have been many notable releases, many of which I admittedly have not yet seen. Still, for me personally, Night and the City probably can not be topped ... it is literally the disc that I have fantasized about, but never thought would come to pass. Thank you, Criterion, and Happy Birthday, Gene Tierney.
Night and the City is my favorite Criterion release of 2015.

I prefer the American cut, because it's cynical film noir at its best, but the British cut is almost as fun, and its hugely educational in terms of how music cues and editing can alter the tone of a film.

Just posted my piece for the Criterion Blogathon -- a visual essay on Andrew Haigh's Weekend, focusing on the musical soundtrack and its unique role in the film: https://popculturepundit.wordpress.c...aighs-weekend/.

The first, and most important, thing to do is to purchase a Barnes & Noble membership. It's $25.00 a year, but it entitles you to an extra 10% off everything all the time in-store, and free shipping for anything you order online. You also get special member coupons via email and/or snail mail throughout the year that you can either print out and use in-store or apply to online orders.

It also helps to bookmark the Barnes & Noble Coupon Thread here at blu-ray.com. If you'll go to post #1048 on page 53, member hariseldon has generously supplied the codes that may be used online and links to printable coupons that are good through the holiday season.

Hope that helps!

Can I just say that everything in the Criterion Collection is better than Top Gun?

Going further, I'll say that just about everything that MST3K and Rifftrax have covered is better than Top Gun.

[Show spoiler]he climbs up, finds the necklace behind some kind of cookie jar-ish type thing and throws it into water. nobody or nothing can say anything bad about Durga or spoil his youthful memories of her. absolutely perfect.

I'm saving the 2nd and 3rd films for a quiet afternoon when I'm not falling asleep after a long day. Grandma will have to watch my son.

Do people actually hate Top Gun that much? I mean I don't particularly care for it, but you folks are obliterating it!

With all this interest in "Top Gun," it's certainly important enough to be part of the collection.

I don't care much for Top Gun, but I'd rather watch that than sit through Flesh for Frankenstein again.

The hottest scene in movie history.

I defy anyone here to name a scene from any film in the Criterion collection that has more heat.

Criterion would need to construct a special fire-retardant disc just to ensure that the heat in this scene alone didn't set your blu-ray player on fire.

...it's just sad that there are so many little boys here who can't handle this level of emotional intensity.

And of course we always mock what don't understand.

That's what I was going for.

I'm not a fan, but I was being intentionally hyperbolic to lighten up a dark Friday. Now Jon Mulvaney is the biggest Top Gun hater on the planet. Just ask him and listen to the 30-minute rant.

Touché about Armaggedon.

I generally liked it until the ending, the "reveal," in which I ended up not liking it. I guess I'm torn on his films, as I don't find Scanners or Naked Lunch to be any good but I somewhat like A Dangerous Method and, to a lesser extent, Cosmopolis.

Cronenberg's certainly not for everyone.
