Top Gun is among the most masculine films around, and despite the posts today, I don't see it as being homoerotic. Now Ben-Hur on the other hand ...

Also I've been reminded that there are some bad Criterion films. Teaches me to make sweeping comments, whether in jest or not.

And we've segued to hated Criterion titles, so I'll say that I Am Curious was disappointing.

Touché about Armaggedon.
If anyone hasn't seen it already, google Tarantino's riff on Top Gun in the movie Sleep With Me. It's a hoot.

That is absolutely hilarious and absolutely perfectly edited. Every time they cut back to him his mania has been ratcheted up by just the right amount and they stay on him for just long enough and no longer.

Sure, you can say it...
I highly recommend Thieves Highway if you haven't seen it.

yeah, I prefer it to Night and the City... I've been going through the Nikkatsu Noir set and it might just be that I prefer noirs where the lead character is likeable (or a good guy, so to say) (e.g. I Am Waiting) I can't stand Richard Widmark in N&TC.
[Show spoiler]the best part is the end when he gets what he had coming... the moron.

Okay, so maybe this is not full-tilt Criterion-related, but only marginally so...

The brand new music video from The Man Who Fell to Earth...

"Blackstar" is the title track from David Bowie's upcoming album, which will be released on his 69th birthday, January 8.

This music video was directed by sometime Breaking Bad director, Johan Renck, and the song will also serve as the music for Renck's TV show, The Last Panther.

I'm really loving both the song and the music video. The video is creepy, but I would expect no less from Bowie, since he's the ultimate space oddity. In fact, this video looks to continue the Major Tom theme from "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes."

I've been on a bit of a Richard Conte kick over the past year or so, thanks for the heads up.

I only watched it because I read Luana Anders was in it. She was one of my favorite actresses in films like Dementia 13, Easy Rider, Night Tide, etc. Turns out it was Luanna Anders! in the film, not Luana ( with one "n"). I wasted my time looking for her. Still, different sources will show picture and bio for Luana when you search Border Radio. Don't be fooled and suffer the same tragic that I did.

I watched "Border Radio" on Hulu and I could barely finish it. I almost never shut off a movie before it ends, but it was a real struggle getting through that one. The "I Am Curious" films are close to unwatchable as well. Those are easily the three worst films in the collection IMO.

I don't know if this is the proper place to post this, but anyway ... I just found out that TCM is having a special day/night (today) devoted to Maureen O'Hara.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is about to start (8:00 ET, US), followed by The Quiet Man, At Sword's Point, Sinbad the Sailor and The Spanish Main.

My wife and I watched this for the first time the other night. It was a present from her and one I had never seen. It started slow for me, but I really got into it by the end. It wasn't what I expected, but still something about it kept me going. It was a fun film, one that tried to be very noir I think, but just misses the mark. Maybe it was the setting?

I suggest you try again, and enjoy Pancho! By far he was my favorite. The character of Marjorie Lundeen was a little over the top for me, too much the femme fatale, but still... something there. I wish I could put my finger on it, but I can't... and that's ok. I still enjoyed it.

Top Gun is not gay you jerks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

There's not one shred of evidence to support Tarantino's outlandish, drug-fueled theory.

...the man is pathetic.

Why? If you didn't like it, watch the special features then give it a re-watch. If you still don't like it, sell it on eBay. I dug it but Montgomery didn't do it for me.

I watched an SD version of the film on a streaming site and never purchased the film.

Going further, I'll say that just about everything that MST3K and Rifftrax have covered is better than Top Gun.

(Ray is going to hurt me.)
This post makes me very sad.

My one year at Arizona State, the theater near our dorm showed it every Tuesday night. We must have gone to see it like 14 or 15 times.
