while we're on the topic, what is the 'newest' film (cinema release-date-wise) on Criterion Blu-Ray? is it Summer Hours (2008)? Secrets of the Grain was 2007 (technically). i think Christmas Tale is also 2008... maybe?

Gomorrah and Che were late 2008 release, iirc.

Che was released 12/08, but Gomorrah was 2/08.

I just wanted to give you the climax to this tale. B&N don't answer phones over the weekend, and they ignored an email I sent, but I had a nice conversation with Mildred yesterday. In the case of incorrect items, I was not supposed to return the package using their return label. Instead she is expediting the correct items (Red Shoes has already shipped and should be delivered today! - I assume they still need to find another copy of Black Narcissus). She is also mailing a return label to me, and I am to drop it in a UPS box with the incorrect package.

I think Amazon makes this process a little easier, but I'm happy with B&N's resolution as well.

The Hurt Locker

The Fountain
The Wrestler
The Assassination of Jesse James
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
The Proposition
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The White Ribbon
The New World
Shutter Island
The Prestige
The Road
Inglourious Basterds
Pulp Fiction
Jackie Brown
Reservoir Dogs
Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2

A Single Man
Zodiac
Red Cliff
Letters from Iwo Jima
Brokeback Mountain
Let the Right One In
Pan's Labyrinth
I would have to agree with the majority of your list, but IMO Quintin Tarentino just flat out doesn't belong in the CC. It's not that I'm not a fan, I love those movies, except for Jackie Brown, I just don't think that the studios would part with something like that. Good choice on The Road and Let the Right One In.

Its funny, right after they announced that The Road was coming to blu-ray I instantly thought of it being on Criterion's watch. I even created a mock cover...

An excellent example is Wilders's Ace in the Hole. For years it didn't even have a DVD release until Criterion scooped it up (Five Graves to Cairo would be great, too--- Criterion )

Others are clamoring for Rivette to hit the collection. Heck, I've never even seen a Rivette film because none are on region 1 video nor do they screen at the Cleveland Cinematheque (which gets just about everything). I'd love for Criterion to do Julie and Celine go boating because then I'd actually get to see it
I think part of the problem to this whole discussion is that Blu Ray is still relatively young and we aren't seeing the boom of indie/foreign/cult films that DVD eventually had/has pumped out on a regular basis. So for now I don't mind that Eureka and Criterion are releasing a few modern titles here and there because good film is good film and also because some of these modern titles won't see the light of a day for at least a few more years from the other major studios and numerous small studios.

I don't agree with the list at all. Most of those films have or will have major studio releases and for the most part are known and funded titles.

There is a whole world of independent/world cinema out there that is much more fitting to the standards of Criterion.

And there's a problem with Criterion releasing known and "funded" titles? Did you have a problem when Criterion released The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? What about The Thin Red Line, Paths of Glory, or Charade? If you do, then I'm sorry.

You know Kurosawa titles are very well known in Japan, Bergman and Godard are very well known in Europe, what's the problem with releasing known titles in America? There's nothing in CC's mission statement that says they only handle "independent/world cinema films", and if there is a whole world of what you call "independent/world cinema" out there, then by all means I would love to have it; as would everyone else in this thread. So, in other words, Criterion should keep doing what they're doing.

Look, most people that visit this forum think it's retarded that Armageddon once belonged in the CC catalog, but you're going to have to look past that. If it takes them releasing a few big titles here and there to boost their sales, then I'm definitely for it.

In a perfect world (in other words a world that went my way) Criterion would handle all of the best films out there, and that includes big studio films. But, we all know that isn't the case, so what's wrong with doing a little "What modern films do you think would be perfect for the Criterion Collection?"-wishful thinking?

It's still part of the collection..... it's still on my shelf.....

It's not like "Mr. Criterion" said "OUT WITH ARMAGEDDON!" due to popular opinion .... it's still got a # in the collection....

Here's my take on all of that though......

It's a fun film... so I own it.... certainly nothing more than a popcorn flick though.

I also am all-for them releasing whatever it is they need to release, in order to fund their more obscure releases.... or simply to stay in business etc..... I appreciate the effort they put forth.

Do I wish that Armageddon was replaced by any one of MANY releases I can think of that Criterion never got the rights to???? Sure..... but they gotta do what they gotta do....

I don't ever think "They need to focus on more classics" or "They gotta focus on more foreign" or any one particular genre, director, etc.... What's great about Criterion (for me) are some of the indie U.S. releases, or foreign releases, that I may have never heard of if Criterion didn't bring them to my attention.... and not only do I get to discover them, they typically receive a great transfer, loads of supplementals, etc.... Like "Revanche" I doubt I would have discovered this gem had it not been for Criterion (and this thread...... this thread, and Pro-B have brought a lot of great films across my radar.....

I'm certainly more about the films, than the 'collection'
The Double Life of Veronique was one I didn't pick up on DVD, but now have the UK release (again, thanks to Pro-B) and it has a GREAT transfer..... if someone is going to put this type of care into the release..... then I don't consider it a film Criterion "lost" I think they probably brought the film to the attention of a large, built-in audience when they released the DVD, and because of that, the studio who currently has the rights didn't just pump out a cookie-cutter transfer.....

I could be wrong.... I could be giving too much credit where it's not due, but it's possible I guess.

Anyone with a B&N close by think they could pick me up a copy of "The Red Shoes" I neglected to order it, and now it's not available

Is The Red Shoes going OOP immediately or something? I've heard of numerous B&Ns that say "not available for ordering" on the website. What gives?

Not OOP, release date is TODAY...... they just got more orders for that particular title than they expected I think......... not sure... I just know I can't order it, and none of my local B&Ns have it, and can't get it until after the sale is over

Sorry, Beta, but the release date for "The Red Shoes" was last week (7/20), along with "Black Narcissus." "The Secret of the Grain" comes out today.

Well, if you still want a copy of "The Red Shoes," I just put in a request at my local B&N store for you. So, if I get the confirmation e-mail that it's there, I'll grab it for you. How's that? You'll just have to either pay me for the shipping to you, or you can drive up to RI, if you'd like?

You are completely right... it is nothing more than a popcorn flick. JK! It does still belong in the catalog and has a spine #. I am also not going to say it doesn't belong. Is it retarded?...well IMO yes it is, however I don't think it was retarded that Criterion acquired the rights to release it. It was a good move because at the time it was popular and it probably boosted their sales.

I agree with you that I want them to do whatever they need to do to temporarily boost their sales so they can keep giving us the same quality of cinema they've been giving us for years. I don't think you have any misplaced gratitude or whatever you said of any kind. You placed the credit exactly where it is due.

Speaking of, I can't wait until the Sept. and Oct. releases role around. I think that those two months are going to be great for Criterion, as well as me!!

Thanks.... hopefully they can get it. My local store isn't too helpful. Although I'm on the fence about it..... I'd probably elect the "shipping" option.... Although if you wanted to deliver it personally, I would be inclined to decline the gracious offer..... since my wife has seen the pictures.... so I'm sure you understand

so Che is the newest Criterion BD by theatrical release date yes?

re: hollywood vs indie/foreign films. i prefer somn w/a happy ending. life is too hard already... why screw that up by watching crap that ends LIKE REAL LIFE >P. i vehemently disagree w/bad endings. fiction/films is where happy endings can happen. bring 'em on =)

I'm Contemplating doing a blind buy for House simply because all of the buzz, and the current price on Amazon. Has anyone here seen it? Is it actually a good film, or just more of a curiosity? Certainly looks pretty interesting.

There are some Rivette films on R1 DVD - Noroit, Va Savoir, (the excellent) The Story of Marie and Julien. Others, like his masterpiece La Belle Noiseuse, were on R1 DVD but have gone OOP. BUt yeah, love to see Noiseuse on Criterion, in both its 4 hour and alternate 2 hour versions.

It's available for order on B&N.com and every local B&N in my area in L.A. has copies in stock?
